The greatest star of all is back, as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black, and Christopher Hampton’s Hollywood fable returns to the West End. Nicole Scherzinger inhabits the much-coveted role of Norma Desmond, the faded silent screen actress. Make sure you’re ready for her close-up: Book *Sunset Boulevard* tickets on London Theatre.

*Sunset Boulevard* premiered in London in 1993, adapted from the 1950 Billy Wilder film noir of the same name. It starred Patti LuPone as Norma, who was a star in silent movies, but is now forgotten and living alone in a crumbling mansion. She hires struggling young screenwriter Joe Gillis to develop the script for her comeback, but their arrangement descends into acrimony, jealousy and murder.

The fabulous role of deluded diva Norma in the *Sunset Boulevard* musical has proved a gift to actresses over the years. Following LuPone, Glenn Close played the role on Broadway (and reprised it in the West End and on Broadway in 2016-17). Ria Jones, Mazz Murray, and Stephanie J. Block have all played her.

Now, it’s Nicole Scherzinger’s turn. She rose to fame as the lead singer of sultry group The Pussycat Dolls and has subsequently appeared on reality competition shows like *Dancing with the Stars*, *The X Factor*, and *The Masked Singer*. 

She has musical theatre prowess, too: In 2014, she starred as Grizabella in the West End revival of *Cats*, belting out its most famous song, “Memory,” and earning an Olivier Award nomination. In 2021, Scherzinger played Grace Farrell in *Annie Live!* on NBC. Most recently, she performed “Reflection” from Disney’s *Mulan* at the Coronation Concert.

Scherzinger leads this exciting new *Sunset Boulevard* London revival, helmed by Jamie Lloyd – who just directed Jessica Chastain in *A Doll’s House* on Broadway. She previously appeared in another Lloyd Webber show, playing Grizabella in the 2014 West End revival of *Cats* and earning an Olivier nomination. She also starred as Grace Farrell in *Annie Live!* on NBC and performed “Reflection” from Disney’s *Mulan* at the Coronation Concert.

Scherzinger now joins a long line of Normas that includes LuPone, Glenn Close, Ria Jones, Mazz Murray, and Stephanie J. Block. ## What to Watch For

- Even if you haven’t seen it before, you’ll definitely recognise some *Sunset Boulevard* quotes. Along with Norma’s fabulous “I’m ready for my close-up,” there’s this great exchange: When Joe quips that Norma used to be big, she replies: “I am big – it’s the pictures that got small!”
- Lloyd Webber wasn’t the first to try a stage adaptation of Wilder's film. Gloria Swanson (star of the movie) worked on a cabaret version, but Paramount Pictures halted it. Stephen Sondheim composed a first scene, but he abandoned the project after Billy Wilder said it had to be an opera since it’s “about a dethroned queen.”
- The original tryout version of Lloyd Webber’s musical starred Ria Jones and Michael Ball. The latter is also now in the West End in another of the composer’s shows, *Aspects of Love*, which made his name.
- In the show, Norma’s comeback vehicle is based on the princess Salome – who, legend has it, did such an alluring dance that she persuaded her stepfather, Herood Antipas, to gift her the head of John the Baptist. Her story has inspired numerous tellings, including Oscar Wilde’s *Salome* play and a movie starring Rita Hayworth.
- Norma’s torch song, “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” has become a breakout hit, recorded by artists including Barbra Streisand, Elaine Paige, and Alfie Boe. Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) also sang the song on *Glee*.

Nicole Scherzinger (full name Nicole Prascovia Elikolani Valiente) is best known for being the lead singer in the globally renowned girl band Pussycat Dolls. She is playing Norma Desmond from 18 September in a new production of *[Sunset Boulevard](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/31115-sunset-boulevard)* at the [Savoy Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/savoy-theatre). 

Scherzinger was born on 29 June 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. At 14, she began acting at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, where she landed a role in her first professional play, La Bête. She graduated from Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS), part of DuPont Manual High School, in 1996. 

Following this, she attended Wright State University, majoring in theatre arts with dance, where she performed in a vast range of regional productions, landing the lead role in shows including *[Guys and Dolls](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/25504-guys-and-dolls-tickets)*, and *Show Boat*. She decided to put her college studies on hold after a few years to pursue her music career in 1999 after landing a spot singing backing vocals for the rock band Days of the New. The aspiring star entered the first season of the TV talent show Popstars, where she won the lead singer role in a girl band ‘Eden’s Crush.

A couple of years later, the band split, and simultaneously, the LA burlesque act The Pussycat Dolls were undergoing a recasting into a pop/R&B group. In 2003, Scherzinger landed the role of the lead singer, singing almost all of the vocals on their debut album. The group sold 55 million records, making them one of the best-selling girl bands ever.

The Pussycat Dolls decided to split in 2009, and since then, Scherzinger has pursued a notable career in television. She has appeared as a judge in several of the biggest TV talent competitions, including  *The Masked Singer*, *X Factor* and *Australia’s Got Talent*. The worldwide star also features in several blockbuster films, including *Moana*, and *Men in Black 3*. 

She made her West End debut in 2014 as Grizabella in *Cats*, where she received an Olivier Award nomination and will return to the London stage in *[Sunset Boulevard](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/31115-sunset-boulevard)* in September.

The Savoy Theatre opened on 21 Oct. 1929. The building was known for being the first public building to be lit entirely by electricity. 

When a fire ravaged the theatre in 1990, destroying the interior, it was meticulously restored by Sir William Whitfield to the original 1929 designs. The theatre reopened on 19 Jul. 1993.

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company played several seasons at the theatre over the past 20 years, their last production being *HMS Pinafore* in 2003. 

The theatre has also housed several musicals, including *She Loves Me* in 1994 starring John Gordon Sinclair and Ruthie Henshall, and has played host to musicals exclusively since 2006. 

## Savoy Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

In the Stalls, the legroom throughout is very good, and the seating is well raked to ensure good views.

In the Dress Circle, the overhang of the Grand Circle affects the view from Row K onwards. The amount of legroom also decreases the further back you sit.

The Grand Circle feels rather far from the stage.
