Following its 2024 sell-out run Nye returns to the National Theatre stage starring Michael Sheen. Book Nye tickets onLondon Theatre.
Nye is a play that tells the story of Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, the impactful politician who created the NHS. This gripping tale begins at the end with Nye terminally ill in a hospital bed. As he creeps toward death, his memories have almost the quality of a hallucination as medical personnel morph into a wide range of people from Nye’s past. Nye recounts his career, from his years in school to local politics and the House of Commons.
This play was an immediate hit following its March 2024 premiere. As The Guardian said of the show, “Nye is still a vital play because Bevan is a vital man of British history. It succeeds in showing us just how high the hurdles he faced were.”
Bringing this tale to life are Michael Sheen, Remy Beasley, Matthew Bulgo, Ross Foley, Jon Furlong, Daniel Hawksford, Nicholas Khan, Stephanie Jacob, Rebecca Killick, Kezrena James, Tony Jayawardena, Rhodri Meilir, Ashley Mejri, Lee Mengo, and Sharon Small. Both Sheen and Small received nominations for the WhatsOnStage Awards for their 2024 performances.
Nye in London has an expert creative team including playwright Tim Price, director Rufus Norris, scenic designer Vicki Mortimer, costume designer Kinnetia Isidore, lighting designer Paule Constable, choreographers Steven Hoggett and Jess Williams, music composer Will Stuart, sound designer Donato Wharton, and projection designer Jon Driscoll.
As the London Theatre review said, “Rufus Norris’s inventive production bounces between past and present, making great use of Vicki Mortimer’s design with its layers of giant green hospital curtains – which whoosh open to reveal new locations, or, in a particularly enjoyable transition, shoot down to the stage to form the House of Commons benches.”
