Be transported to a remote rural pub in Ireland in the beloved play, The Weir, by award-winning playwright Conor McPherson (Girl from the North Country, The Brightening Air, The Hunger Games on Stage). Book The Weir tickets on London Theatre.
Nearly 30 years after its premiere, this drama remains as powerful as it was in its original staging. This play tells the story of a group of four men spending time together in a pub on a windswept night. When a newcomer, Valerie, joins them, what begins as a night of supernatural storytelling to impress Valerie gives way to deeper stories. This is a tale that highlights the power of storytelling and shows the need for human connection.
The Weir in London stars Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe-nominated, and Emmy-winning actor Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, Harry Potter, Paddington 2) in his West End debut.
The cast also includes Owen McDonnell, Seán McGinley, Kate Phillips, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.
For the first time ever, Conor McPherson directs his gripping drama.
McPherson said, "I can hardly believe it's thirty years since I wrote The Weir – and about thirty years since I first met the wonderful Brendan Gleeson. It's an absolute honour to bring this play to life again with one of the great titans of Irish acting. I'm hugely looking forward to directing my play for the very first time and sharing this production with audiences in Dublin and in London very soon."
Since its 1997 premiere, this play has been staged countless times worldwide, including a major London revival in 2013 at Donmar Warehouse directed by Josie Rourke and starring Brian Cox.
As The Guardian's review said of the staging, "In the light of McPherson's later plays, it is possible to see this as a study in the persistence of the supernatural in a modern, materialist Ireland. But what really matters is the revelation of character."
