Every Brilliant Thing is a play that tells the story of a child who decides to create a list of all the things that make life worth living to help their mother following her suicide attempt. Throughout their life and into adulthood, the list continues to grow as they learn more about themselves and have more life experiences. This is an impactful and powerful play that explores the lengths we will go to for those we love.
This is a one-actor show that includes audience participation. The cast will perform in rotation—the exceptional actors include Lenny Henry, Ambika Mod, Sue Perkins, Jonny Donahoe (the show’s original co-creator), and Minnie Driver.
Every Brilliant Thing in London is by Olivier Award-nominated writer Duncan Macmillan (People, Places and Things).
As The Guardian reported, “Every Brilliant Thing grew out of a monologue that Macmillan wrote. He developed it with director George Perrin, then joint artistic director of new writing company Paines Plough. They invited Donahoe – one half of musical-comedy duo Jonny and the Baptists, with a knack for improvisation – to come on board.”
The creative team also includes co-direction by Jeremy Herrin and Duncan Macmillan, set and costume design by Vicki Mortimer, lighting design by Jack Knowles, and sound design by Tom Gibbons.
Since its premiere over a decade ago, Every Brilliant Thing has become a beloved production that has been staged worldwide. When it was in Los Angeles, the LA Times review said, “The list in Every Brilliant Thing approaches a million items. Many of them are super quirky… but each reminds us of those glimmers of delight that are as much a part of our lives as our heaviest sorrows.”
