A world of grief and rhythm unfolds in Deep Azure, the late Chadwick Boseman’s powerful play, inspired by a real tragedy and staged in the glow of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This show is directed by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu in his Globe directorial debut. Book Deep Azure tickets on London Theatre.
In this powerful UK premiere, another side of Boseman’s talent is revealed — one influenced by Shakespeare and the pulse of hip-hop and song. When Azure’s fiancé, Deep, is murdered by the police, her entire world falls to pieces. As grief consumes her and her eating disorder slowly worsens, she finds it hard to find stable ground in a world that no longer feels whole. With Deep’s friends Roshad and Tone always beside her, and the mysterious Heavenly MCs of Street Knowledge alongside them, Azure finds meaning in endurance after a terrible loss.
Deep Azure is a play that was inspired by the murder of Boseman’s friend and university student, Prince Jones. It transforms a real, lived experience of grief into something beautiful, filled with poetry and music. The play first premiered in 2005, and this will be its UK premiere in London, where its focus on injustice feels especially poignant.
Deep Azure in London has music by Conrad Murray and John Pfumojena, design by Paul Wills, casting by Becky Paris CDG, and candlelight design by Azusa Ono. The talented cast includes, Ryn Alleyne, Maxwell Chartey, Elijah Cook, Jayden Elijah, Aminita Francis, Selina Jones, Justice Ritchie, and Imani Yahshua.
Infused with the power of language and the strength of connection, Deep Azure masterfully makes grief feel like something one can spiritually grow from, while remaining deeply intimate. Boseman uses verse and movement to create a world where pain is not static, but becomes something experienced through and worked out from the body.
