The Cherry Orchard is a play which centres around Lyubov Ranevskaya, who returns to her family estate in Russia after spending many years abroad, only to discover that her childhood home is in serious financial trouble. Unless something radically changes quickly, the property, including its beloved cherry orchard, will be sold to pay off the family’s debts.

Businessman Lopakhin proposes dividing up the land for holiday homes and sacrificing the orchard altogether. But for Ranevskaya and her family, the orchard represents more than just property. It holds memories, childhood, status, and a way of life that is rapidly disappearing before their eyes.

As the family struggles to face what lies ahead, Chekhov brings together characters who are caught in a complex social order and a changing future. Humour is masterfully woven with heartbreak as ambitions and difficult conversations continue while the fate of the estate looms over the characters.

Olivier Award winner Kristin Scott Thomas stars as Ranevskaya, returning to Chekhov’s work after winning acclaim for The Seagull. Stephen Mangan plays Lopakhin, with Vinette Robinson as Varya, Nadia Parkes as Anya, Jack Riddiford as Trofimov, Karl Johnson as Firs, and Peter Wight as Gaev.

Ian Rickson directs the new adaptation by Conor McPherson. The creative team also includes set designer Chloe Lamford, costume designer Sussie Juhlin-Wallén, lighting designer Bruno Poet, sound designer Tom Gibbons, and composer Stephen Warbeck.
