That's the way it is. After more than three years in London's West End, & Juliet has announced its closing. The musical's final performance is set for 25 March 2023 at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

& Juliet takes place after Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and imagines what Juliet would have done if she didn't die at the play's end. As reimagined by Shakespeare and his wife, she goes on a coming-of-age journey to Paris and discovers who she is separate from Romeo.

Her journey is set to 30 pop hits from Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Céline Dion, and more, all written by songwriter Max Martin. The book for & Juliet is by Max Martin, a writer on the sitcom Schitt's Creek.

The musical received widespread acclaim. The London Theatre review of & Juliet reads, "Frequently resembling a series of pop videos come to life... it is performed with a glinting knowingness and powerful pop theatre voices. The company is led by the extraordinary Miriam-Teak Lee in the title role of Juliet, who brings a sizzling presence, incredible vocals and moves to turn her into a force of nature."

Before coming to the West End, & Juliet had its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in September 2019, moving to the Shaftesbury in November of that year.

In 2020, & Juliet was nominated for nine Olivier Awards and won three, for its cast members Miriam-Teak Lee (in the title role), David Bedella, and Cassidy Janson. Lee also won Best Actress at that year's WhatsOnStage Awards, where & Juliet received a record-breaking 13 nominations.

& Juliet is set to open in New York later this fall and in Melbourne in the spring. According to a post on the show's Instagram page, U.K. and European tours for & Juliet are soon to be announced.
