Inspired by the cult-favorite film and with a score from legendary country music star Dolly Parton, “9 to 5” is an uplifting musical about teamwork, unlikely friendships, and female empowerment.

The story focuses on three women who all work at Consolidated Industries — Violet, Judy and Doralee. Their sexist boss, Franklin Hart, neglects to give Violet a promotion again, gives Judy an awful first day, and spreads rumours that Doralee is having an affair. The women are almost at boiling point, and unite to jokingly make plans for how they could kill their selfish boss. After unintentionally poisoning him the following day, they tie him up and decide to imprison him. With Hart absent, the women turn the office around and introduce more benefits to the staff, including childcare, full lunch hours, and rehab programs. When the Chairman of the Board arrives to praise the company’s increased productivity, will Violet finally get the promotion she deserves?

Age Recommendation: 12+.  The production contains comic sexual references, light drug use and the occasional curse word.
## What to watch for
The musical began its life as a reading in 2007, followed by a week-long workshop and industry presentation. It made its world premiere in Los Angeles, before opening on Broadway in 2009.

The original film is ranked at number 74 on the American Film Institute’s “100 Funniest Movies,” and a sequel to the 1980 film is in the works and will geared up to reflect the #MeToo movement.

The 2009 Broadway production won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for 13 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Musical Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards.

Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 the Musical continues to thrill West End audiences at the&nbsp;<a href="/theatres/savoy-theatre">Savoy Theatre</a>, where the country music superstar's music has been telling the story of a group of office workers rising up, coming together and getting revenge on their seedy boss.&nbsp;

The musical opened on Broadway in 2009 at the Marquis Theatre, starring actress Megan Hilty. The production was nominated for four Tony Awards, including one for Parton herself who was up for Best Original Score. Reviews for the musical were generally positive, with The Guardian calling the musical “a triumph” when it opened in New York.

9 to 5 the Musical opened at the West End's Savoy Theatre on 17th February 2019 in the presence of Dolly Parton herself, who took to the stage during the curtain call to express her pride in the show and added that the cast 'made her look good!'.&nbsp;

9 to 5 the Musical has been performed in the UK before. Amy Lennox, Bonnie Langford and Natalie Casey starred in a UK tour of the show in 2012, and the musical played the fringe London venue Upstairs at the Gatehouse in 2017. A UK tour concluded in 2013, and tickets for the 2019 West End premiere at the Savoy are now on sale.&nbsp;

Sometimes theatre is all in the timing. When the 1980 comedy <a href="/show/12856-9-to-5-the-musical-tickets">9 to 5</a> was first turned into a Broadway musical in 2009, it was just the latest in a run of film titles being opportunistically adapted for the stage; and it duly ran for only five months there. But now, in the wake of #MeToo, its story about sexual harassment and bullying in the office place, as well as unequal pay and opportunities for female workers there, carries a new resonance and relevance.And now when the tables are turned on the boss of Consolidated Industries - and he ends up trussed up in his own bondage fetish gear hanging from the ceiling - there's a lot to cheer about. Finally,&nbsp; justice is being done. And this is no longer a fantasy wish fulfilment; women ARE now claiming their rightful space, and not just in Broadway musicals (though opening across the street from the Savoy at the Adelphi, Waitress also tells of a downtrodden woman asserting her power; and is made by a female-led creative team of writer, composer, director and choreographer that is its own assertion of that).It turns an also-ran musical into something bang up-to-date - and a smart, fast brand-new production also pitches it with supreme confidence that's full of both wit and grit.As with The Witches of Eastwick, another film-to-stage adaptation that premiered at Drury Lane in 2000 and is long overdue for revival, there are three female protagonists who do battle with a manipulative man - and come out on top. Caroline Sheen, who played a teenager in that musical, now graduates 19 years later to playing the mother of a teenage son (one who shares his spliffs with her, something she notes is a triumph of good parenting). She's a widowed woman who is the senior office administrator - and is overlooked for a promotion in favour of a man she actually trained.&nbsp;Sheen has come to this role only after Louise Redknapp, who was originally announced to play it, fell and fractured her wrist on the way to rehearsals; yet Sheen might, like Violet Newstead she is now playing, be considerably more qualified to lead a West End musical after starring roles in <a href="/show/mary-poppins">Mary Poppins</a>, Les Miserables and more.Regardless, she is absolutely sensational here, full of grace, class and determination. She is superbly joined by Amber Davies as an office newbie Judy Bernly, who is forced to take a job after her husband leaves her for his secretary; Davies may have gained fame through ITV's reality show Love Island, but she wins it back here. The trio is completed by the scintillating Natalie McQueen, an avatar for Parton herself as Doralee Rhodes, the secretary mistaken for the boss's mistress.There's also brilliant casting from two stage veterans: Brian Conley and <a href="/actor-profile/bonnie-langford">Bonnie Langford</a> are game sports as the nasty boss Franklin Hart and his devoted secretary (and office spy) Roz Keith, both spending part of the evening sporting only versions of underwear. Langford comes close to stealing the show and walking away with it in her big number "5 to 9", where she laments those hours that she's not at the office near her idol.But the show also has another coup: Dolly Parton herself introduces the show and joins in the title opening song "9 to 5" by video. Nicole Scherzinger returns to the West End this September, starring as the immortal Norma Desmond in a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary Sunset Boulevard, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

The Savoy Theatre opened on 21 Oct. 1929. The building was known for being the first public building to be lit entirely by electricity. 

When a fire ravaged the theatre in 1990, destroying the interior, it was meticulously restored by Sir William Whitfield to the original 1929 designs. The theatre reopened on 19 Jul. 1993.

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company played several seasons at the theatre over the past 20 years, their last production being *HMS Pinafore* in 2003. 

The theatre has also housed several musicals, including *She Loves Me* in 1994 starring John Gordon Sinclair and Ruthie Henshall, and has played host to musicals exclusively since 2006. 

## Savoy Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

In the Stalls, the legroom throughout is very good, and the seating is well raked to ensure good views.

In the Dress Circle, the overhang of the Grand Circle affects the view from Row K onwards. The amount of legroom also decreases the further back you sit.

The Grand Circle feels rather far from the stage.
