“Wildcat Cheer”

We set the scene in the gym at East High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico following the Christmas break, where basketball star Troy Bolton tells his Jock friends about meeting a certain Gabriella Montez on New Year’s Eve while skiing. It turns out that Gabriella has just enrolled at their school and has made friends with the Brainiacs. We also meet siblings Sharpay and Ryan Evans, who are proud Thespians.

“Start of Something New”

We flash back to a romantic duet in which Troy and Gabriella express feelings that they’ve never experienced before. In the present moment, their friends sing about their new year’s resolutions.

“Get’Cha Head in the Game”

Ms Darbus announces that the next school musical will be Juliet and Romeo, a twist on Shakespeare. Troy and Gabriella are amazed by their unexpected reunion and Sharpay, who is interested in Troy herself, is jealous. At basketball practice, Troy is distracted: “Why am I feeling so wrong / My head's in the game / But my heart's in the song/ She makes this feel so right...”

“Auditions”

Auditions for Juliet and Romeo begin. Sharpay and Ryan of course put themselves forward, as do all the Thespians.

“What I’ve Been Looking For”

Sharpay and Ryan sing the audition number in an upbeat, doo-wop style – they’re very confident but are they too slick?

“What I’ve Been Looking For”

Gabriella and Troy have a go at the number and perform in a much slower, more soulful style, just as writer Kelsi envisioned it. Despite it not being an official audition, they’re asked to return for a callback.

“Cellular Fusion”

When Gabriella and Troy’s friends find out, the news circulates all over the school. How can they balance the school musical with their other commitments? Sharpay and Ryan are disgusted – they didn’t even ask permission to join the drama club!

“Stick to the Status Quo”

Everyone ought to know their place at East High – stay in your clique, respect the hierarchy, and don’t do anything that isn’t expected of you. But what if you’re a Jock who loves to bake or a Brainiac who’s obsessed with hip hop or a Skater who plays the cello? Sharpay is thoroughly confused – what's happening?

“I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”

Troy and Gabriella dance together in this number that didn’t make the final cut of the movie. The Jocks and the Brainiacs plot against the couple for straying out of their lanes and Sharpay tells Ms Darbus that Troy and his dad (who happens to be the school’s basketball coach) are plotting to sabotage the show.

“Wildcat Cheer” (reprise)

At basketball practice, Troy and his dad argue. Coach Bolton doesn’t approve of his son’s friendship with Gabriella or his foray into musical theatre. Troy asks why he can’t be an athlete and a performer and leaves abruptly.

“Counting On You”

Troy and Gabriella are late to basketball and Scholastic Decathlon practices respectively – their teammates are all counting on them and don’t appreciate them being distracted by musical theatre. Worn down by his friends’ lack of support, Troy pretends that he doesn’t like Gabriella – unbeknown to him, his words are transmitted to her directly.

“When There Was Me and You”

Gabriella and Troy individually reflect on their romance. It was like a fairytale but now reality has hit. The Jocks and Brainiacs realise what they have done and are sorry.

“Start of Something New” (Reprise)

The next day, Troy finds Gabriella in the theatre and tells her that he didn’t mean what he said. They reminisce about their first meeting on New Year’s Eve.

“We’re All in This Together”

Troy and Gabriella inform the basketball and Scholastic Decathlon teams that they’re not going to go to the callbacks. Their friends are sorry for their interference and encourage them to go ahead with it. Everyone is special and talented in their own way and they’re stronger together!

“Bop to the Top”

Sharpay and Ryan perform their callback number, which is a homage to their unstoppable ambition with a Latin flavour.

"Breaking Free"

The big basketball game, the science decathlon, and the callbacks are all scheduled for the same time... Chad engineers a power cut, in which only the theatre is functioning. Troy and Gabriella’s rendition of their audition song, a heartfelt power ballad about finding strength in each other, is so moving that Ms Darbus gives them the lead roles on the spot.

“We’re All in This Together” (Reprise)

There are happy endings all round as the Wildcats win both the basketball and the Science Decathlon. Everyone celebrates and dances together, even Sharpay and Ryan. The whole school is united!
