Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is set to make her West End debut in the next production in Jamie Lloyd's year-long residency at the Playhouse Theatre as she's set to star in Anton Chekhov's The Seagull next year.

It's the third production to be announced in Lloyd's season in the West End, and will follow Cyrano de Bergerac, which currently runs starring James McAvoy, and will follow A Doll's House with Jessica Chastain - who also makes her West End debut.

Mother of Dragons Emilia Clarke to make West End debut

Emilia Clarke will perform in the West End for the first time, but has previously acted in New York when she appeared in Breakfast at Tiffany's at the Cort Theatre. She is best-known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO hit Game of Thrones which concluded after eight seasons earlier this year, and has also starred in the films Me Before You and recent festive flick Last Christmas.

A few years ago, Clarke was rumoured to be making her first West End outing in the play Five Times in One Night by Chiara Atik, but this never came to fruition.

More classics for Jamie Lloyd's season

The Seagull is the second of three productions in his season, all of which give new versions of classics. Anya Reiss will update the script of Anton Chekhov's 1895 play, while Martin Crimp's version of Edmond Rostand's 1897's Cyrano runs until 29th February, and Frank McGuinness' take on Ibsen's A Doll's House opens in June.

Anya Reiss' theatre work includes a number of Chekhov adaptations, including The Seagull and Three Sisters at Southwark Playhouse and Uncle Vanya at St James' Theatre. Her writing also includes The Acid Test at the Royal Court, directed by Simon Godwin, and her first play, Spur of the Moment, won both Evening Standard and Critics' Circle awards for most promising playwright.

The Seagull cast and creative team

Clarke will play Nina in The Seagull, which follows the conflicts - personal and professional - between two writers and two actors, including Nina. Further cast joining Clarke in The Seagull is yet to be announced.

Jamie Lloyd will direct the piece, and creatives are yet to be announced.

The Seagull tickets

The Seagull will run at the Playhouse Theatre from 11th March 2020 to 30th May, and tickets will go on sale in the new year.
