## What is *Come From Away* about?

Immediately after the 9/11 attacks, 38 planes were ordered to land in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland. The *Come From Away* musical tells the true stories of 7,000 stranded visitors that were housed and fed following the biggest tragedy the US had seen. 

## Is *Come From Away* a true story?

*Come From Away* saw Sankoff and Hein travel to the Newfoundland town of Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and learned of the kindness of its townspeople. They felt like their stories had to be told and wrote a positive, upbeat musical to celebrate the residents. They modestly set out to write a musical they wanted high school kids to perform, rather than aspiring for a Broadway musical. 

*Come From Away* opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2017 following runs in Seattle, Washington DC, and Toronto. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score of a musical, and it won for Best Direction of a Musical. The New York Times’s Ben Brantley called it a "big bearhug of a musical."

Following a short run in Dublin at the end of 2018, the show transferred to London’s [Phoenix Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/phoenix-theatre) in early 2019, beginning previews on 30 Jan. 2019. 
*Come From Away* won four Olivier Awards in 2019, including Best New Musical. 

On the back of the success of the musical, Sankoff and Hein are writing a film adaptation of the show, set to be produced by Mark Gordon and directed by Christopher Ashley. A *Come From Away* musical film was released on Apple TV+ on 10 Sept. 2021, before the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

All of the amazing characters in *Come From Away* are based on real people. Irene Sankoff and David Hein interviewed many of those involved during a visit to Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and some of their actual words are used in the show’s book and lyrics.

Those inspiring figures include the trailblazing pilot Beverley Bass, the first ever female captain of an American Airlines commercial plane, and who later captained the first all-female crew in commercial jet aviation history. She gives us that crucial pilot’s perspective on the tragedy, and expresses her feelings in breakout hit “Me and the Sky”.

Other larger-than-life characters include the heroic mayor of Gander, Claude, one of several Newfoundland mayors represented in the show, as well as SPCA worker Bonnie. The latter battles bureaucracy in order to care for all of the animals stranded on the planes – including a rare bonobo chimp.

*Come From Away* is directed by Christopher Ashley, the artistic director of California’s La Jolla Playhouse. His other work includes the Broadway musicals *Memphis, Xanadu* and *Diana*, and the Kennedy Center productions of Sondheim’s *Sweeney Todd* and *Merrily We Roll Along.*

## What to Watch For:

- *Come From Away* was originally planned as a straight play. It was when Irene Sankoff saw the folk band Shanneyganock playing “The Islander” at a Gander commemorative event, and how such music united everyone present, that she realised it had to be a musical.
- As a way of emphasising the connection between the locals and the plane passengers, and illustrating that we are all part of a greater whole, every member of the *Come From Away* ensemble plays at least one Gander resident and one visitor. See if you can spot them all!
- Instead of using lots of busy set designs, choreography and special effects, director Christopher Ashley decided on a minimalist approach – just 12 actors using chairs and tables. That allows the audience to fill in the context themselves and to bring their own personal memories and feelings to the piece.
- *Come From Away* is the longest-running Canadian musical in Broadway history, besting the previous record-holder *The Drowsy Chaperone*. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has praised the show for “bringing us together across borders”. There’s a wealth of specifically Canadian references in there – like the doughnut chain Tim Hortons.
- *Come From Away* has also been captured for screen. A filmed version of the Broadway production was released in 2021 and is available to watch on Apple TV+, plus there’s reportedly a feature film adaptation in the works, with Christopher Ashley set to direct.

But <a href="/show/come-from-away">Come From Away</a> is in a category of its own: a genuinely original musical, based on real-life events that took place in the immediate wake of 9/11, that is full of heart, truth and genuine emotion.&nbsp;This feel-good show about a feel-bad world-shattering event is also a little show with a big heart. Winner of every major UK award for Best New Musical, Come From Away shares the incredible real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives.

Born in Bath in 1983, Alice Fearn is best known for her acclaimed work in the roles of Elphaba in *[Wicked](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/wicked)* and Beverley Bass in *[Come From Away](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/come-from-away)*.

As a child, Fearn showed interest in a performing career, learning how to play the piano as well as singing for elderly residents at care homes. Later accepted at Mountview Theatre School in London, she eventually made her West End debut as understudy Laura Fairlie in *The Woman in White* at the [Palace Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/palace-theatre) in 2004.

Fearn has also performed in [*Les Miserables*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/les-miserables) at the Queen’s Theatre (now [Sondheim Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sondheim-theatre)), playing a factory girl. While in the production, she was the understudy for Cosette and Fantine. In 2017, Fearn made her *Wicked* debut as Elphaba at the [Apollo Victoria Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/apollo-victoria-theatre), opposite Sophie Evans as Glinda. She continued in the role for two years, with a final performance in July 2019.

Fearn has most recently played Beverley Bass in *Come From Away* at the Phoenix Theatre. Following *Come From Away,* she leads the world premiere of *Then, Now & Next* at Southwark Playhouse Borough.

Multiple bus routes through Charing Cross road also connect it well with the rest of the city. Additionally, the nearest NCP car park is situated in Shaftesbury. It's recommended to use public transport due to restrictions on parking in the area.

Phoenix Theatre - TodayTix

The Phoenix Theatre opened on 24 Sept. 1930. It was built on the site of the Alcazar Music Hall, a performance space that had fallen from grace into a casino.

Noël Coward’s *Private Lives* opened the Phoenix Theatre, starring Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier. On Coward's 70th birthday, the bar in the foyer of the theatre was given the name the Noël Coward Bar in his honour.

The theatre’s greatest success arrived in November 1991 in the form of *Blood Brothers*, Willy Russell’s musical. It ran for 21 years, finally closing on 10 Nov. 2012. The Phoenix Theatre was also home to the West End premiere of *Come From Away.*

## Phoenix Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The seats in the Stalls offer very good views of the stage, with a light rake in the seating helping seats further back. 

The view from the Dress Circle is generally very good, though the rake of the seating is not as noticeable as in other theatres. 

The Grand Circle is surprisingly close to the stage, which is great for feeling involved in the show.
