A new revival of *Oliver!* will transfer to the West End this December. Lionel Bart's adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel will open at the Gielgud Theatre.

Following a critically and commercially successful world premiere at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, *Life of Pi* transfers to Wyndham's Theatre in London. See *Life of Pi* in London before it closes in January 2023. 

Yann Martel's *Life of Pi* novel was adapted into a film in 2012 which, directed by Ang Lee, was a huge success. Grossing over $600 million at the box office, the film, which starred Suraj Sharma, was nominated for nine Academy Awards, taking home four including Best Director and Best Original Score.

*Life of Pi* is an epic voyage across the ocean, adapted beautifully for the stage by Lolita Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti's works include *Red Velvet* at the Garrick Theatre and *Hymn* at the Almeida Theatre. In 2021, Chakrabarti was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.

Chakrabarti's stage adaptation premiered at Sheffield Theatres in June 2019 to positive reviews from theatre critics. The *Life of Pi* play features inventive direction by Max Webster, with life-size puppets designed by Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell. 

*Life of Pi* won five Olivier Awards in 2022, including Best New Play, and a shared award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play for the seven actors who portray the Richard Parker tiger puppet.

## What is *Life of Pi* about?

*Life of Pi* is a play that's based on Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. *Life of Pi* centres on the title character, the sole human survivor of a shipwreck along with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Together, the boy, the beast and a menagerie must learn to coexist on a lifeboat as they battle for survival.

## Who is Richard Parker in *Life of Pi*?

Richard Parker is the name of the tiger in *Life of Pi.* The tiger is given such a human name due to miscommunication. Richard Parker's original name was Thirsty, but due to a mess up in paper work, his name became Richard Parker.

## How long is *Life of Pi*?

The *Life of Pi* running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes, including a 15-minute interval. Matinee performances begin at 2:30pm or 3:00pm and evening performances begin at 7:00pm.

Yann Martel won the Man Booker Prize for his celebrated novel, which works both as a thrilling adventure tale and as a fascinating exploration of different philosophies, faiths and ideas. 

Both elements remain in the stage play: in fact, the very art of storytelling, and how we use it to make sense of our lives, is on display, since the show features Pi recalling past events to two people while he’s in hospital.

The clever stage adaptation is by Lolita Chakrabarti, known as both an actress and a writer. Her previous plays include *Red Velvet*, about the 19th-century African-American actor Ira Aldridge, which starred her husband Adrian Lester. 

Bringing the *Life of Pi* world to life also required an innovative creative team, including director Max Webster, set and costume designer Tim Hatley, video designer Andzrej Goulding, lighting designer Tim Lutkin, sound designer Carolyn Downing, and puppetry specialists Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell. The latter pair previously worked on *Angels in America*, and Caldwell on the original *War Horse*.

## What to Watch For:

- Martel’s novel was previously adapted into a film by Ang Lee, in 2012. Starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan and Rafe Spall, it featured ground-breaking visual effects work and was critically acclaimed. The movie was nominated for 11 Oscars and won four, including a Best Director award for Lee.
- The look of the animal puppets was inspired by driftwood, tying them visually into the concept of the shipwreck, and are designed so that you see their skeletons working. They’re made out of Plastazote, plywood, aluminium and nylon, with bungee cords allowing their joints to stretch.
- There are multiple puppeteers in the company, working in teams and rotating shows, since it’s such a taxing effort to work the puppets and requires incredible levels of skill and coordination. Even though each move is carefully rehearsed ahead of time, there are always slight variations on each night, keeping it fresh.
- Which belief system would you rely on in a crisis? As Pi is stranded, he imagines various people in his life offering him advice to help him cope – including religious faith, pragmatic logic, mathematical analysis and morality. It’s one of the interesting ways that Martel’s theories come through in the play.

A teenage boy adrift at sea for 227 days with only a Royal Bengal tiger for company? Yann Martel's Booker Prize-winning philosophical novel&nbsp;<a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/19234-life-of-pi" target="_blank">Life of Pi</a> is the ultimate adaptation challenge - which is what makes this triumphant Sheffield Crucible production, now playing in the West End, such a pleasure. It's a clear team effort: serious theatrical craft and creative brilliance that results in images of hallucinatory beauty.Hiran Abeysekera plays Pi Patel, who loses his family when the ship carrying them and the inhabitants of their zoo from India to Canada is struck by a storm. He makes it to a lifeboat, followed by some of those zoo animals: a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan, and Richard Parker the tiger - so called because a clerk mixed up the names on the form and gave the great cat his captor's moniker.Pi relates his extraordinary tale to two strangers in a Mexican hospital room: a harried transport investigator and a consulate official. This framing device is the weakest element of the production, bluntly spelling out Martel's exploration of narrative and belief systems, and the two figures are unfortunate stereotypes: the stern Japanese man and the cuddly Canadian woman. The heart sinks whenever we return to this plodding present.Otherwise, this is a gorgeous staging by adaptor Lolita Chakrabarti and director Max Webster: vivid, witty, poignant and wondrous. It conjures up whole worlds, beginning with the zoo owned by Pi's parents. A giraffe pokes its head through one of the windows, a zebra shies away from its pen, and a goat playfully butts Pi - all courtesy of War Horse puppeteers Finn Caldwell and Nick Barnes.The detailed physicality is riveting, particularly the tiger, whose joints uncoil like springs as he pounces on his prey before curling up to lick his paws. Equally impressive is the way that it conveys the rich inner lives of these animals. I'm afraid to say I immediately overinvested in the doomed goat - a rookie error. But that's the point here: we must meet the production with our own imagination and empathy, to be part of the team effort.From the zoo, we head to a teeming street market and then to the ship, as Pi's parents decide to leave a politically turbulent India. (Talk of how government corruption damages a whole nation has extra resonance right now.) Here Tim Hatley's design, Tim Lukin's lighting and Andrzej Goulding's video combine to incredible effect, giving us water crashing over the ship's deck, pounding rain and sheer terror. Later, as Pi drifts in his lifeboat, we get huge skies, rocking waves, pinprick stars and glowing fish - a seascape somewhere between remarkably real and thrillingly mystical.That works beautifully for Martel's tale, which must function as both adventure yarn and complex analogy. Pi isn't just testing his physical will but his understanding of various religions and methods, whether pure logic, mathematical analysis or morality, as well as figuring out how best to process trauma. All of those elements are carried by the phenomenal Hiran Abeysekera, who gives us the raw struggle to cling to life as well as the quick-witted, enigmatic Pi who proves slippery with facts.There are good supporting turns from Mina Anwar, Nicholas Khan and Payal Mistry as Pi's family, and Tom Espiner as Commander Grant-Jones, the stuffy upper-crust author of a survival guide which Pi discovers while at sea - and which provides some welcome levity.President Barack Obama wrote to Martel saying that Life of Pi was "an elegant proof of God, and the power of storytelling." The Wyndham’s Theatre opened on 16 Nov. 1899. The theatre was commissioned by Charles Wyndham who also managed the [Criterion Theatre.](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/criterion-theatre) 

The Wyndham’s welcomed its first long-running production – Sandy Wilson’s musical *The Boyfriend* which opened on 14 Jan. 1959 and ran for over 2,000 performances. Another successful musical came to the theatre in 1972, the Roundhouse’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s *Godspell*, which ran for three years. The theatre has seen many notable actors grace the stage, including Alec Guinness, [Vanessa Redgrave](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/vanessa-redgrave), Diana Rigg and Madonna.

In May 2005, the Wyndham’s Theatre was bought by Cameron Mackintosh through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. The theatre was renovated in 2008 and plays regularly run for limited engagements at the Wyndham's Theatre.

## Wyndham's Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

In the Stalls, the front four rows of seating are not raked, but other than that the seats in the Stalls offer excellent views of the stage.

Only the seats in Row G of the Royal Circle are affected by the overhang of the Grand Circle. Seats are well raked, offering great views of the stage.

The Grand Circle is set very high in this theatre.

The Balcony is set behind and above the Grand Circle, so does feel far from the stage, but the view is unobstructed.
