Following the news that Newsies will open in London this year, a venue and performance dates are now set. Newsies will begin previews at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre from 29 November, ahead of an opening night on 8 December, and performances to 19 Feb. 2023.

Newsies will be an immersive production and staged in-the-round. The Newsies seating is named after six areas in New York: Flushing, The Bronx, Woodside, Richmond, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

Newsies features a book by Harvey Fierstein, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Jack Feldman. Matt Cole will direct and choreograph the production.

“As a huge fan of the original Disney film and the Broadway production, I am extremely honoured and thrilled to be reimagining this brand new version for London and the UK. This site-specific version of the show provides an exciting opportunity to present the piece in a non-traditional format. Set in the round, the audience will be thrust into turn-of-the-century New York, where the action and choreography will weave its way in and out of the audience.” said Cole.

Based on the Newsboy Strike of 1899, the Newsies musical follows Jack Kelly, a newspaper boy in late 19th century New York who protests change and unites his fellow newsboys to fight for justice. The original Broadway production of Newsies opened in 2012 and won Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Choreography.

Newsies casting will be revealed. The Newsies creative team includes scenic design by Morgan Large, costume design by Natalie Pryce, lighting design by Mark Henderson and sound design by Tony Gayle.

Newsies fan performances will take place on 11 January and 15 January.
