"The Producers" at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane 22 Oct 04 starring Richard Dreyfuss, Lee Evans
The Mel Brooks' Broadway hit musical The Producers, is confirmed to open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane Theatre on 9 Nov 2004, following previews from 22 oct 04.
(NOTE: Booking is not open for this production yet!!)
Richard Dreyfuss will star as the conniving Max Bialystock and Lee Evans will play his nerdy sidekick Leo Bloom.
Mel Brooks told the Evening Standard newspaper: "What an act, what a double. These guys look so good together - they were born to play these parts."
The Producers opened on Broadway in April 2001 and quickly became Broadway's hottest ticket. It went on to win a record 12 Tony Awards in 2001, when it starred Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.
Richard Dreyfuss has starred in films like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He won an Oscar in 1978 for The Goodbye Girl. He said The Producers was "a great musical" that "makes you laugh so much you want to spit your milk up". But he added: "My voice is terrible. I sound OK in the shower, but then it is hard to hear over the water."
Lee Evans is known as a stand-up comedian and has appeared in films like Mouse Hunt and There's Something About Mary. "I am delighted. This is the kind of job that doesn't come along very often," he said.
The show has book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and music and lyrics by Mel Brooks. It is directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman. The design is by Robin Wagner, costumes by William Ivey Long, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski.
A couple of guys come up with a scheme to produce the outrageous Broadway musical ever. They think they can take off with all their investors' money-but when the curtain goes up on their gigantic singing, dancing spectacular, they realize their plan has gone ridiculously wrong.
