The Glass Menagerie Information

Amy Adams will make her West End debut in Tennessee Williams' classic play, The Glass Menagerie. Adams will play Amanda Wingfield in a limited run of The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of York's Theatre. The Glass Menagerie tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Described as a four-character memory play, The Glass Menagerie follows Amanda Wingfield and her children Tom and Laura, all living together in an apartment in St. Louis. The Glass Menagerie play is told through the eyes of Tom, who tells of Laura's life as a polio sufferer and her mother's insistence to find her daughter a partner.

The Glass Menagerie is a semi-autobiographical play, featuring characters based on Williams' own family. It was first performed in Chicago in 1944, and was a reworking of The Gentleman Caller, a previous short story by Williams. The Glass Menagerie would ultimately become one of Williams' greatest works, with future plays including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire.

Amy Adams is a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, who has starred in movies such as Vice, American Hustle and Junebug. Adams makes her play debut in The Glass Menagerie, having been in a New York revival of Into the Woods in 2012.

The full The Glass Menagerie London cast stars Paul Hilton and Tom Glynn-Carney, who will share the role of Tom. The decision to split the role of Tim is by director Jeremy Herrin, wishing to explore Tom's fragmented character. Paul Hilton and Tom Glynn-Carney have both been in acclaimed productions; Hilton starring in The Inheritance and Glynn-Carney in The Ferryman. Lizzie Annis and Victor Alli complete the cast.

The Glass Menagerie London premiere was in 1948, starring Helen Hayes as Amanda Wingfield and was directed by John Gielgud. Now, both aforementioned thespians have theatres named after them on Broadway and in the West End respectively. Recent revivals of The Glass Menagerie include a Young Vic production in 2010, starring Deborah Findlay. In 2017, Cherry Jones starred in The Glass Menagerie, which was a seven-time Tony Award-nominated production that transferred from Broadway.

Even though we don't know what The Glass Menagerie stage will look like, we can already get excited. Scenic design is by Vicki Mortimer, who has previously worked on Follies at the National Theatre. Lighting design is by Paule Constable, who has worked on The Ocean at the End of the Lane, also at the Duke of York's Theatre.
