Currently starring in the latest Broadway hit to open in London, Sam Tutty and Rebecca McKinnis have spoken about the emotional clout and relatability to the characters in Dear Evan Hansen.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Spotlight podcast, Tutty (who plays the lead) and McKinnis (who plays Evan's mum Heidi) spoke about how they each relate to the characters they play on a very personal level.

"I completely relate to my character,  - people always tell me I'm Heidi Hansen", said McKinnis. "Having that love and need to look after your child but maybe not having the time to do so if you're working full time, so for me, I really relate."

"There are so many places I can totally relate to Evan," added Tutty. "Not necessarily being in positions he finds himself in, my Dad left when I was young as well so I can totally identify with that. There's always one character [you can relate to]."

Tutty was cast in the musical having only graduated from stage school earlier this year, and spoke about flying to New York for the audition process and having to keep his casting a secret, while McKinnis told the podcast how she told her agent she wanted to be in the show well before auditions were announced.
