Video: Martin Shaw, Maureen Lipman and cast talk about The Best Man
Ahead of the West End opening of Gore Vidal's The Best Man at the Playhouse Theatre last Monday, we spoke to the cast about the play and how the piece, written almost sixty years ago, remains relevant.
Martin Shaw and Jeff Fahey star in the play as two potential presidential candidates for an unnamed US political party, and both are vying for an endorsement from sitting Commender-in-Chief Hockstader, played by Jack Shepherd. Maureen Lipman plays the head of a womens' group, while Glynis Barber and Honeysuckle Weeks play the wives of the two candidates.
In his four-star review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, Mark Shenton said the play was "a riveting political thriller", adding that Martin Shaw "may well be one of our very finest stage actors".
The Best Man is at the Playhouse Theatre until 2nd May.
