42nd Street
A real classic Broadway show, 42nd Street is full of everything you want from a musical: a stupidly good chorus of tap dancers, headed up by the extremely talented Clare Halse, real standard from the American songbook "We're In The Money", "42nd Street", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" performed by an excellent cast including Sheena Easton and Tom Lister.
Dreamgirls
Another Broadway musical going strong in the West End is Dreamgirls. Based on the story of The Supremes and other R&B acts, it features sons like "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", "Listen" and "One Night Only". It's an iconic show with performances that will live long in the memory. You man have seen the 2006 film starring Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, but experiencing this show live is a real experience.
School of Rock
School of Rock could be the perfect surprise ticket for someone who doesn't think they're 'into musical theatre'. Everyone knows (and loves) the film, which starred Jack Black as a wannabe rock star who trains a group of private school kids to form a band. School of Rock comes complete with an insanely good cast of kids performing their instruments live on stage, and feels more like a good rock concert than anything.
The Ferryman
The Ferryman was regarded as the play of the year by many. It's about an Irish family in the midst of The Troubles in the 80s, and is reunited writer Jez Butterworth and director Sam Mendes after their collaboration on the latest James Bond film Spectre. It's hard to find a review of The Ferryman that doesn't give the production five stars, and is pretty much guaranteed not to disappoint.
Five Guys Named Moe
Possibly one of the most feel-good shows in London at the moment,Five Guys Named Moe is a non-stop bundle of musical joy. It's at the custom-made Marble Arch Theatre, which includes a bespoke '40s cocktail bar, and big-top style stage set with tables encompassed by the stage, perfect for date night. It's about a man being cheered up after he's just been dumped, which may not sound like the most romantic story in the world, but it's full of amazing music like "Saturday Night Fish Fry", "Is You Is or Is You Ain't Ma' Baby" and "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie".
