Almeida’s Summer and Smoke to transfer to West End starring Patsy Ferran

The rarely performed play will transfer to the Duke of York's from November

The Almeida Theatre's production of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke is set to transfer to the West End following a hugely successful at the North London venue earlier this year.

Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, the full cast will reprise their roles at the Duke of York's Theatre from 10th November to 19th January, with tickets going on sale on Wednesday.

First seen in the West End in 2006 (60 years after it was written), Williams' play is set in Mississippi, where minister's daughter Alma Winemiller lives. The story sees an unlikely romance blossom between her and an unruly young doctor, John Buchanan who lives next door.

Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham reprise their roles as Alma and John, and will be joined by Seb Carrington, Nancy Crane, Eric MacLennan, Forbes Masson, Tok Stephen and Anjana Vasan.

In a four-star review of the original production, LondonTheatre.co.uk said the featured 'two huge central roles, had an intensely atmospheric feel, and really should not be missed'.

Summer and Smoke will be produced by the Almeida and Sonia Friedman Productions and it has designs by Tom Scutt, lighting by Lee Curran, sound by Carolyn Downing, compositions by Angus MacRae and casting by Julia Horan.

Summer and Smoke will run at the Duke of York's Theatre from 10th November to 19th January, with an official opening on 20th November.
