Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella to receive West End premiere at the Gillian Lynne

A new production of Cinderella will receive its West End premiere later this year. The musical will feature music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and will begin performances at the Gillian Lynne Theatre from September 2020, with School of Rock closing at the West End venue in March 2020.

Cinderella to open in the West End

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella will begin performances from September 2020, with details on casting, performance dates and a performance schedule to be announced. Reinventing the fairytale, the musical is based on an original idea by the Emmy Award-nominated Emerald Fennell, with Cinderella marking Lloyd Webber and Fennell's collaborative debut.

Speaking about the musical, Lloyd Webber said: "I have long wanted to write my own version of Cinderella but could never find a take on the classic story that really grabbed me.  Emerald Fennell has written something truly exciting and original, and the moment I read her outline I knew I'd found my latest collaborator."

About Cinderella

The upcoming production of Cinderella will feature a new version of the classic fairytale, written by Emerald Fennell. Workshop performances of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella was performed at The Other Palace in May 2019, with Mark Shenton saying it's a "confident, funny, fresh & sassy contemporary tale of such a classic tale, a million miles from a panto but with some thrilling new showstoppers."

The workshop performances starred Carrie Hope Fletcher in the titular role, Tyrone Huntley as Sebastian, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt as her stepmother, Sophie Isaacs and Rebecca Trehearn as the stepsisters, and Ruthie Henshall as the Queen. 

Cinderella creative team

The creative team of Cinderella will feature an original book by Emerald Fennell, who is best known for being the lead scriptwriter for the second series of Killing Eve. Fennell has also appeared on screen, playing Camilla Parker Bowles in Netflix's The Crown.

Lyrics are by David Zippel, whose previous songwriting credits include City of AngelsThe Goodbye Girl and The Woman in White. Cinderella will be directed by Laurence Connor, with choreography by JoAnn Hunter, with the pair previously partnering on Andrew Lloyd Webber productions including School of Rock and the 2019 revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Further creative team members are to be announced.
