Cate Blanchett to star in new production 'Electra / Persona'
This new play is based on Sophocles’ story of Electra from Greek mythology and Ingmar Bergman’s celebrated 1966 film Persona.
Cate Blanchett returns to the National Theatre in the world premiere of Electra / Persona. Performances begin in the Lyttelton in August.
This new play, directed and adapted by Benedict Andrews (A Streetcar Named Desire), is based on Sophocles’ story of Electra from Greek mythology and Ingmar Bergman’s celebrated 1966 film Persona. Combining the two stories, the production will interrogate the inner life of an actress and explore how grief can make us strangers to ourselves.
Blanchett, who made her National Theatre debut in Martin Crimp's When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, will be reunited with Nina Hoss (Hedda), following their performances in the critically acclaimed film Tár. Ella Lily Hyland (Black Doves) completes the cast.
Music is by Oscar Award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker), with further details yet to be announced.
