The show, which follows nine performers as they bring chart classics to life in a pub environment, opened in the West End in October 2021 and has welcomed over 280,000 audience members through its doors.

Based on the 2003 Christmas film of the same name starring Will Ferrell, *Elf the Musical* follows Buddy, a boy who is raised in the North Pole and heads back to New York to find his father. Along the way, Buddy the Elf learns what it’s like to live in the real world and brings his unique outlook on life to friends and family.

*Elf the Musical* made its West End premiere in 2015, also at the Dominion Theatre. However, the upcoming production will feature a new creative team: a book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin, and songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin.

Phillip Wm. McKinley directs *Elf the Musical*. The creative team includes set and costume design by Tim Goodchild, choreography by Liam Steel, lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe and sound design by Gareth Owen.

The *Elf* musical is based on the 2003 film of the same name, but there's a major difference between the *Elf* film and *Elf* on stage. While Papa Elf plays a crucial role in the *Elf* film, you won't see him on stage. Instead, you'll see a lot more of Santa Claus — it is Christmastime after all. Plus, there's a few more references to Christmases in the 2020s rather than the early 2000s.

*Elf* premiered at the Dominion Theatre in 2015, starring Jay McGuiness as Buddy. Simon Lipkin then played Buddy in 2022. The Christmas spirit returns to the Dominion Theatre for *Elf* London performances in 2023.

### What is *Elf the Musical* about?

The *Elf* musical is based on the hit Christmas film of the same name. *Elf* centres around Buddy, a lovable yet awkward misfit. As a young boy, Buddy accidentally found himself inside Santa’s sack and eventually grew up in the North Pole with Santa and his elves. Even though he's raised as an elf alongside other elves, Buddy struggles to fit in with fellow hardworking elves. Once Buddy gets older, he learns that he isn't an elf, but a human. How is this possible? 

To learn where he really comes from, Buddy heads to New York to reunite with his birth father. But Buddy's never ventured outside of the North Pole before. How will he behave? What happens in New York? How do you get around? While in New York, Buddy learns a great deal about himself and the wider world. And with Santa crashing in Central Park, can Buddy the Elf share the Christmas spirit?

*Elf* is a landmark Christmas film, so you can expect plenty of festive songs to be stuck in your head once you’ve seen the musical. Listen out for songs including “Christmastown,” “There is a Santa Claus,” and “The Story of Buddy the Elf", a musical number that sees Buddy relays how he ended up in the North Pole in the first place.

Even though the Elf movie turns 20 this year, it’s still a defining winter comedy. *Elf* is often on our screens every year, with millions of children watch Buddy’s hilarious antics year after year. So naturally, the Will Ferrell-led film proved the ideal source material for a Christmas musical. 

While you watch *Elf* on stage, you may see a Disney-fied flair, and that's down to whimsical lyrics by Chad Beguelin. The Tony-winning writer Thomas Meehan and Tony-nominated comedian Bob Martin adapted *Elf* for the stage with sensational results. The show played two winter seasons on Broadway in 2010 and 2012 and then transferred to London for 2015 and 2022 performances. Third time’s the charm for this musical, as it returns to the Dominion Theatre in 2023. 

## What to Watch For: 

- There’s a few differences between *Elf* on stage and the *Elf* film. Instead of Papa Elf, you’ll see a lot more of Santa Claus — let’s hope he’s not too busy and manages to visit everyone on Christmas Eve.
- Lyricist Chad Begeulin also worked on West End musicals such as *Aladdin* and *The Wedding Singer*. He also co-wrote *The Prom*, a high school musical following four out-of-work actors as they help a teenage student attend her local dance.
- When Will Ferrell filmed *Elf*, he struggled to sleep as he consumed so much candy. He said: “Anything for the movie, I'm there. If it takes eating a lot of maple syrup, then I will—if that's what the job calls for." Let’s hope our West End Buddy doesn’t endure a similar fate.

Christmas is no longer a day-long celebration — the first episodes of *Strictly Come Dancing*, the John Lewis adverts, and once upon a time *The X Factor*, usher in festive goodwill from as early as September.

So it’s no surprise then that in November, before the *Elf* curtain rises, audience members hear a medley of winter songs to get us in “the spirit.” Sadly, this intoxicating spirit doesn't carry forward into the stage action: *Elf* doesn’t deliver a Christmas snap — it’s like pulling a cracker and ending up with the losing side. 

It’s difficult to distance *Elf* away from the film. Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin’s story still brings Buddy — a human who grew up in the North Pole with Santa’s elves — to the Big Apple in search of his father once more. But, an oafish Santa now narrates Buddy’s story, and he’s more interested in sharing the results of his bets on the Arsenal vs. Liverpool game. Matthew Sklar and Chad Begeulin’s score accompanies the action, and for all its sparkling showbizzy qualtiies, all the forgettable songs blend into one.

Phillip Wm. McKinley fails to inject trademark *Elf* humour into its iconic scenes. The catchphrases you’ll know and love: the “beef and cheese,” the “smiling’s my favourite,” and the "cotton-headed ninny muggins" insult were thrown away. 

Thankfully, Simon Lipkin holds his own as the goofy, spirited Buddy, cartwheeling and worming his way across the stage and into our hearts. It’s a shame then that *Elf* woefully underutilises its other cast members. 

Georgina Castle delivers all the goods as Jovie, but her short stage time shuts down any hope of falling for her and Buddy together. In songs, Rebecca Lock and Logan Clark as Emily and Michael Hobbs shine as the close-knit mother and son, but their limited interactions with Buddy fall flat. And for all Tom Chambers’s charm, his monotone performance as Walter Hobbs does little to bring the family together.

Liam Steel’s choreography pops in all the right places: an elf-based opening number was a right knees up, and he utilises the ensemble into a tinsel-skipping, candy-cane twirling unit. But, just like waiting for a present that isn’t delivered in time for 25 December, boxes reading “Marry Christmas” highlighted a lack of finesse.

Tim Goodchild’s set design stretches like thin wrapping paper in order to cover the vast Dominion space, but it’s mercifully aided by Patrick Woodroofe’s whimsical lighting and projections transporting us from the North Pole to Manhattan in a few moments.

If you’re looking to see *Elf* because you enjoy the film, you'll walk away with pep in your step. Buddy the Elf is still the Christmas hero we need, and if you still believe, then Santa may fly in his sleigh. But if you’re looking for a musical that leaves you singing loud for all to hear, this may not be what you want under your tree.

The Dominion Theatre, located in London, is an iconic venue with a remarkable history, hosting musicals, concerts, and performances for almost a century. Established in 1929, it prides itself in its distinctive Art Deco style that resonates with its visitors and transports them to a majestic era. The theatre provides a large capacity of over 2,000 seats, making it one of the largest in London. Known for hosting some of the greatest musicals of all time, the Dominion Theatre became a prominent venue for 'We Will Rock You' - a musical inspired by the band Queen. The stage has seen performances from many famous artists, including Judy Garland. 

### How to Get to the Venue 

The Dominion Theatre is conveniently situated at the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road, making it easily accessible by public transport. The closest tube station is Tottenham Court Road, which is only a minute’s walk away. Services from the Northern and Central Line serve this station. Multiple bus routes also pass close to the theatre including 7, 8, 14, 19, 24, 29, 38, 55, 73, 98, 134, 176, and 242. For those driving, the nearest car park is an NCP on Adeline Place, with a 24-hour car park on Great Russell Street.

The Dominion Theatre opened on 3 Oct. 1929. The theatre is located on the site of the former Horse Shoe Brewery, site of the 1814 London Beer Flood.

The theatre screened the premiere of Charlie Chaplin’s film, *City Lights* (with Chaplin himself attending). During its history, the Dominion Theatre hosted movies such as *South Pacific* and *The Sound of Music*, whilst interspersed with live performances, most famously the *Judy Garland Show*. In the 1980s, music stars played at the Dominion Theatre, including Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, David Bowie and U2.  

In the early 1990s, plans were set to convert the theatre into a car park, but this was not followed through. Now, the Dominion Theatre is home to large musicals, including *Grease,* a 12-year run of *We Will Rock You,* and *The Prince of Egypt.*

## Dominion Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has two levels – the Stalls and Circle. It is a very large space and offers excellent views of the stage wherever you sit.

In the Stalls, the rake of the seating is very good, offering excellent views from most seats and the legroom is excellent too. 

In the Circle, the seats are strongly raked which offers a great view.
