EVENING STANDARD THEATRE AWARD WINNERS

The awards were presented by Ben Elton at the Savoy Hotel.

Most Promising Playwright: Gary Mitchell, from Belfast, for "The Force of Change". He received his award from Tom Stoppard, and received a cash prize of £30,000

Best Actor: Simon Russell Beale, for "Hamlet". He received his award from Dame Maggie Smith

Best Actress: Paola Dionisotti, for her performance in "Furthur Than the Furthest Thing". Michael Gambon presented her with the award.

Best Director: Michael Grandage, for his work on two plays, "As You Like It" at the Lyric Hammersmith, and "Passion Play" at the Donmar Warehouse.

Outstanding Newcomer: Chiwitel Ejiofor,23, for his performance in "Blue/Orange".

Best Musical Event: The Car Man, by Matthew Bourne. This award was presented by Jerry Hall.

Best Play: Blue/Orange, by Joe Penhall.

Best Comedy: Stones In His Pockets, by Maria Jones. The award was presented by Macaulay Culkin

Best Stage Design: Bunny Christie, for the Birmingham Rep revival of Tennessee William's "Baby Doll" at the National and West End.
