The Almeida Theatre in north London have today announced full casting for their upcoming production of Mary Stuart, as rehearsals for the production begin.

Playing both Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart, Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams will share the central roles, decided at each performance by the toss of a coin. They will be joined by Alexander Cobb, Rudi Dharmalingam, Vincent Franklin, David Jonsson, John Light, Carmen Munroe, Eileen Nicholas, Daniel Rabin, Sule Rimi and Alan Williams.

The production is directed by Associate Director of the Almeida Robert Icke who has adapted the play by Friedrich Schiller, following on from his recently adapted productions of Uncle Vanya and Oresteia at the venue. The production will be designed by Hildegard Bechtler, with lighting by Jackie Shemesh, original composition by Laura Marling, sound by Paul Arditti, and video by Tim Reid.

"Two queens. One in power. One in prison. It's all in the execution. Schiller's political tragedy takes us behind the scenes of some of British history's most crucial days."

The Almeida also announced a new short play by Sonali Bhattacharyya, 2066, which will be directed by Dani Parr, running for two performances on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 November at 5.15pm. The piece, which will be free to watch, has been created by working with women aged 17 to 97.

Tickets for Mary Stuart are now on sale.
