Giles Terera to lead 'A Christmas Carol' at The Old Vic

Directed by Matthew Warchus and adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne, Charles Dickens's tale of a miserly man who learns to change his ways after he is visited by four ghosts.

Giles Terera returns to The Old Vic to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in the 10th anniversary production of A Christmas Carol. The show will run from 10 November to 9 January 2027.

Terera was last seen at The Old Vic in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in which he played Dale Harding. In a review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, our critic said of his performance: "Terera offers strong supporting work as genteel, unofficial leader of the ‘Acutes’ (the patients deemed curable) Dale Harding. He humorously draws out Harding’s faux intellectual energy, as well as gently depicting his hidden homosexuality."

Giles is such an impressive performer who I’ve seen being both barnstormingly entertaining and heartbreakingly truthful. I’m a huge fan of his work, and thrilled that he’ll be taking on this beloved role.”

Terera added: “I’m delighted to be returning to the Old Vic stage and to be playing Ebenezer Scrooge in this extraordinary production of A Christmas Carol. It’s one of our most treasured stories, with as much to teach us as ever, brought to the stage by Jack Thorne’s brilliant script in Matthew Warchus’ beautiful production. To play this unforgettable character, in the round, in Matthew’s final year as artistic director, is a real honour. I can’t wait to get started!”

The production has set and costume design by Rob Howell, composition and arrangement by Christopher Nightingale, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Simon Baker and movement direction by Lizzi Gee.

Warchus will step down as artistic director of The Old Vic at the end of 2026.
