Groundhog Day at Old Vic - further cast announced

According to the Daily Mail, The Old Vic Theatre have announced further details for the world premiere of a new musical adaptation of the 1993 film Groundhog Day, which will run at their Southbank venue from 11 July to 17 September 2016, with an official opening on 16 August.

Joining the previously announced Andy Karl in the role of 'Phil Connors' will be Carlyss Peer as 'Rita' and Eugene McCoy as 'Larry'.

The musical will reunite the creative team of 'Matilda the Musical' and will feature book by original screenwriter Danny Rubin, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Matthew Warchus. Set and costume design will be provided by Rob Howell, with lighting by Hugh Vanston and sound by Simon Baker.

Synopsis: "Groundhog Day is the story of Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, when sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, finds himself caught in a time loop where he is forced to repeat the same day again and again...and again."

Andy Karl has appeared in numerous productions on Broadway, including 'Rocky The Musical', 'On The Twentieth Century', '9 to 5', 'Legally Blonde', 'Wicked' and 'Saturday Night Fever'. He currently plays Sergeant Mike Dodds in NBC's 'Law and Order: SVU'.

Carlyss Peer trained at RADA and recently starred in productions of 'Hamlet' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Her TV roles include 'Doctors' and 'Holby City'.

Eugene McCoy has recently starred in the London productions of 'Jersey Boys' and 'American Psycho' which ran at the Almeida Theatre.

Further casting is yet to be announced.
