SAM MENDES TO QUIT DONMAR WAREHOUSE

It is reported that Sam Mendes is to quit as artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse after 10 years in the job.He will leave at Christmas 2002.

He has overseen more than 70 productions of which over a third have been world, UK or London premieres.

The 35 year old , who won an oscar for Best Director for the film "American Beauty" , told the Evening Standard "It is time to hand the Donmar on to another generation. This is a hard but fitting decision to make, and we believe it is the right way to ensure the Donmar's ongoing development as a vibrant, influential theatre."

Advertisements for Mendes's job is expected to appear next week.
