Big West End openings include Broadway hit Beetlejuice: The Musical finally crossing the pond, as well Cynthia Erivo giving us a wickedly exciting one-woman Dracula, and Ralph Fiennes playing Henry Irving in Grace Pervades.

The National Theatre’s new season, under the artistic directorship of Indhu Rubasingham, also has lots of treats in store, including Les Liaisons Dangereuses starring Monica Barbaro, Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner, and an intriguing collaboration with Stormzy.

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo is swapping her broomstick for fangs as she stars in her first stage show in a decade. It’s a fascinating challenge: playing all 23 characters in a reimagining of Bram Stoker’s gothic masterpiece Dracula, at the Noël Coward Theatre from February 2026.

The show is directed by Kip Williams, who previously helmed the hit version of The Picture of Dorian Gray with Sarah Snook. Erivo called Williams’s vision “thrilling, terrifying, and deeply resonant”, adding that it was a “rare gift for an actor to inhabit so many voices and perspective in one piece.”

Yes, it’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s fabulously macabre movie, this weird and wonderful musical centres on teenager Lydia Deetz, who shares her home with two newly-deads and the titular character: a demonic ghost who thrives on chaos.

The London transfer resurrects Beetlejuice’s Broadway creative team, including book writers Scott Brown and Anthony King, composer Eddie Perfect, and director Alex Timbers, and it begins haunting West End audiences at the Prince Edward Theatre in May 2026.

Revival

The brilliant director Marianne Elliott returns to the National Theatre (where she previously directed War Horse and The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time) to helm a major revival of this steamy play, adapted by Christopher Hampton from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s novel.

The cast features Hollywood actress Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), two-time Olivier winner Lesley Manville (Oedipus), and TV star Aidan Turner (Poldark, Rivals), as the aristocrats locked in a game of sex, love and power. It’s expected to arrive in spring 2026.

Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Raison reprise their roles in this West End transfer of David Hare’s Grace Pervades, which premiered at Theatre Royal Bath in the summer. The pair play the real-life Victorian stage legends Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, the pioneering actor-manager and actress respectively.

The play follows both their careers and their complex personal lives, including the experiences of Terry’s children Edith and Edward Gordon Craig. This fascinating look back at our stage history comes to London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket in April 2026, directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Must see

Another enticing transfer is the new musical version of the gorgeous best-selling novel about a retired pensioner named Harold Fry who begins a long walk to visit an old friend, and who changes many people’s lives along the way. Rachel Joyce has adapted her own book for the stage, and it was a hit at Chichester Festival Theatre this summer.

The show features a score by indie musician Passenger, and its leads Mark Addy (The Full Monty, Game of Thrones) and Jenna Russell (Hello, Dolly!, Sunday in the Park with George) are returning to play Harold and his wife Maureen. The musical begins performances at Theatre Royal Haymarket in January 2026.

Broken Glass

Play
Arthur Miller
Political

This little-known Arthur Miller play comes to the Young Vic in a new production by the talented director Jordan Fein (Fiddler on the Roof, Into the Woods). It’s set in 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, and sees a woman become so upset by reports of violent attacks on Jewish communities in Germany that she is paralysed – but also rises in defiance.

It’s a rare opportunity to see this Miller work, as presented by a visionary director who has form with classic texts. This is also a play that will doubtless have plenty of resonance with today’s fraught world. It begins performances in February 2026.

The Tempest

Must see

Expect a completely fresh take on Shakespeare’s famous play from the unique theatre-maker Tim Crouch (An Oak Tree, I Malvolio). Crouch is going to put his stamp on this island-set drama, featuring the magician (and overthrown duke) Prospero, his daughter Miranda, spirit Ariel, and native creature Caliban.

Crouch’s version will likely explore how this strange quartet tell themselves stories about desire, revenge, rescue and redemption, and how their storytelling conjures other characters out of thin air. This enchanting production comes to the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in January 2026.

The details of this very special project are still under wraps, but we definitely know that the Brit Award-winning rap artist is working on a new production as part of Indhu Rubasingham’s inaugural season. His world premiere piece will be unveiled in the Dorfman space.

Stormzy said that theatre is “such a unique space where storytelling, music and performance in all come together in the most powerful way”. Does that mean this intriguing piece will feature Stormzy himself, or his music, or both? We can’t wait to find out!

Play
The Beatles
Premiere

Beatles fans should head straight for the Kiln Theatre to see this fascinating behind-the-scenes drama. Tom Wright’s play turns the spotlight on the “Fifth Beatle”, the band’s brilliant and beloved manager Brian Epstein, who was instrumental in the Fab Four’s rise to fame.

However, Epstein also had troubles in his personal life, including persecution for his homosexuality, drug taking and gambling. That juxtaposition of glorious success and private difficulty should make for a rich drama. Please Please Me premieres in April 2026.
