Roald Dahl's The Witches, adapted by David Wood, will open at the Wyndham's Theatre 9 Mar 2005, following previews from 3 Mar, for a limited season to 2 April 2005 starring Ruby Wax as 'The Grand High Witch'.
Featuring illusions by Paul Kieve, who created magic effects for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and who is personal magic tutor to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, this stage production is directed by Jonathan Church, designed by Simon Higlett, lighting by Mark Jonathan, choreography by Jenny Arnold.
The rest of the cast features Dilys Laye (Grandmother), Giles Cooper, Isabel Ford, Chris Hawley, James Hirst, Peter Holdway, Katerina Jugati, Camilla Mathias, Keith Saha , Catherine Skinner.
'The Witches' follows the adventures of a seven-year-old boy and his somewhat-magical grandmother who battle with real-life witches, led by the most powerful villainess of them all - the Grand High Witch. Plotting to get rid of all the children in England, she has a hideous plan to take over all the sweet shops, poison the children with chocolate and transform them into mice!
One of the most colourful and outspoken personalities on television, Ruby Wax has won the hearts of the British public as a loud-mouthed American who asks celebrities the sort of questions we wouldn¹t dare! She is best known for her chat show "Ruby, Hot Wax" and "Ruby Wax Meets...", a series of probing interviews with the rich and famous, including the Duchess of York , Imelda Marcos, Roseanne Barr and Liza Minnelli and David Guest. Although a terrible singer, her outlandish performances ensured she reached the final of "Celebrity Fame Academy". She first met fellow comediennes Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders at their literary agent's Christmas party, and the idea behind their hit comedy series "Girls On Top", which she appeared in and co-wrote, was born. Ruby has continued to work with Jennifer as script editor on the long-running cult comedy, "Absolutely Fabulous". As a stage actress, Ruby performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in her own solo West End show "Wax Acts", directed by Alan Rickman. She has just finished work on the feature film "Tara Road" in Africa.
This show is part of of UK tour , produced by The David Wood Company and Ambassador Theatre Group in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company, HOWEVER, Ruby Wax will only be starring in the West End production at the Wyndham's. The rest of the tour below does not include Ruby Wax!
