Cinderella The Musical Information

Carrie Hope Fletcher stars in a brand-new version of Cinderella with a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Cinderella tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The revisionist take on the classic fairytale reimagines Cinderella as a punk princess. She has been cast out by her family and her town, and she and her prince cannot publicly admit their feelings for each other. Though Cinderella does make it to the ball, it's not a smooth pumpkin carriage ride — she contends with the male gaze and beauty standards along the way.

Carrie Hope Fletcher is best known for her musical stage performances in Les Misérables as Fantine and Éponine, which she returned to in 2019 to appear in the all-star concert before returning to the full West End production at the Sondheim Theatre. Fletcher also originated the role of Veronica Sawyer in Heathers the Musical in London.

The Cinderella musical features an original book by the Academy Award-winning screenwriter Emerald Fennell. As well as writing Promising Young Woman, which won her an Academy Award, Fennell’s credits include leading the script of season two of BBC's Killing Eve, as well as appearing on screen in Netflix's The Crown, playing Camilla Parker Bowles.

Cinderella also features a new score by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by David Zippel. It will be the second time the English composer has partnered with American lyricist — whose other musical work includes City of Angels and Disney's Hercules — since The Woman in White in 2004.

Laurence Connor directs the Cinderella musical, with choreography by JoAnn Hunter, reuniting the creatives after they worked together on Lloyd Webber's musicals School of Rock and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Connor's other musical work includes Chess and Miss Saigon in the West End.

Our review

We could all use a fairytale right now after the year (and a half) we've had. A little escapism to drown our troubles and remember that sometimes happy endings and dreams do come true. Well, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella is a different kind of fairytale, one that, instead, reminds us of our humanity and that sometimes things turn out as you least expect them to. Who wants to ride off into the sunset anyway when you could make mistakes and learn some things along the way? That's certainly been...

The clock has struck midnight for Cinderella in the West End. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical has set a West End closing date of 12 June. The closure was announced on 1 May via social media and a statement from Lloyd Webber. “I am incredibly proud of Cinderella. Not only did it get some of the best reviews of my career, but we led the charge to reopen the West End, ensuring that theatre and live entertainment remained relevant and in the news. While mounting a new show in the midst of Covid has...

The Cinderella story isn't a new one. Elements of the Cinderella fairytale originate from as early as Ancient Greece, however the “Cinderella” trope in which a downtrodden young woman finds a new life became popular in the 19th century. In recent years, there’s somewhat of a Cinderella musical theatre renaissance — Anna Kendrick played Cinderella in the Into the Woods movie, Camilla Cabello added a poppy flair in the 2021 Cinderella film, and now Carrie Hope Fletcher plays the title character in...

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella is set in Belleville, a quaint French town under matriarchal rule. The Queen governs the ‘"Most Attractive Town" and values looks over personality, while the wicked Stepmother controls Cinderella's life. These determined women stop at nothing to get what they desire, even if it’s at the expense of other people’s fortunes. “I enjoy the fact that the Queen claims her power,” said Trehearn, who plays the Queen in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella. While the monarch...

We all wish we had a Fairy Godmother. This fantastical character changes peoples lives in a few moments — and the famed Fairy Godmother trope is often associated with Cinderella. But in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella, the Godmother doesn't only focus on a person's appearance. She connects with Cinderella and Prince Sebastian on a deeper level, encouraging them to see inside themselves. “The Godmother’s] whole role is she can make you look like what you want to look. The question really falls...

With so many Cinderella stories out there, it’s almost as if there’s a Cinderella multiverse expanding before our very eyes. There’s even three musicals which centre on the princess: Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Cinderella in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods are in the traditional canon. But now there’s a new Cinderella in town, and she’s here to rock your world. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella breathes a 21st-century essence into the archaic fairytale and it’s pretty spectacular....
