2020 Olivier Awards winners to be revealed in October
This year’s winners will be celebrated with a special programme on 25 October.
UPDATE: Audiences can tune into the Olivier Awards from 9.30pm on Official London Theatre's YouTube channel. Don Black will be awarded the Special Award for their contribution to the theatre. Ian McKellen will also be honoured in the ceremony, with performances from Sam Tutty in Dear Evan Hansen and Miriam-Teak Lee in & Juliet.
After the initial postponement of the 2020 Olivier Awards, it was announced on 28 September that this year’s winners will be celebrated next month. Jason Manford will host a special programme honouring this year’s winners on 25 October, which will be broadcast on ITV and Magic Radio.
The award ceremony will be broadcast from the London Palladium, with the main show containing the award winners, pre-filmed performances and interviews. Additional awards will be broadcast before the show on Official London Theatre’s Youtube channel.
Magic Radio listeners will be able to tune into Olivier-themed shows, celebrating the award-winning performers and shows. Details on performances and guests are to be confirmed.
Ahead of the ceremony, Julian Bird, Chief Executive of Society of London Theatre and Executive Producer of the Olivier Awards, said: “We are excited to be able to honour this year’s nominees and winners during a very difficult time for our industry, and demonstrate the outstanding talent we have in our theatre sector in the UK. Coming together to celebrate their achievements feels more poignant now than ever before as we all fight collectively to save our theatre industry.”
It has also been announced that the next Olivier Awards ceremony is due to take place in 2022. According to Official London Theatre’s FAQ’s: “Due to the minimal amount of new productions that have been able to open this year, we currently anticipate the next Olivier Awards ceremony taking place in April 2022. We will be announcing plans to celebrate the theatre industry in 2021 at a later date.”
& Juliet leads the musical nominations, receiving nine nominations. Revivals of plays including Rosmersholm and Cyrano de Bergerac earned five nominations. The full list of 2020 Olivier Awards nominees can be found here.
