"Calico" to close early 3 April 2004

Calico by Michael Hastings, has posted early closing notices at the Duke of York's Theatre, after a run of less than 2 months. The last performance will be 3 April 2004. (The play was originally booking to 29 May)

Directed by Edward Hall , and starring Imelda Staunton, Dermot Crowley, Romola Garai , the play opened in February to mixed notices from the popular press: NICOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Remarkable new play." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Trashy docu-drama." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Elegant production also contains good performances.." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "What a disappointment Calico proves." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "The play's problem is its uncertainty of focus and tone."

This new play concerns the passionate relationship between James Joyce's troubled daughter Lucia and the playwright Samuel Beckett
