Fiddler on the Roof to close early 16 Feb 2008

Fiddler on the Roof, which was taking bookings to 26 April 2008, has now posted early closing notices at the Savoy Theatre for 16 Feb 2008.

The show, which opened at the Savoy Theatre 29 May 2007, following previews from 19 May, was originally only playing for a limited run to 29 Sep 2007, but booking was extended on several times "due to such popular demand".

The musical received mostly good notices from the popular press: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Mature, heartfelt, impeccably executed revival." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "superb production." THE GUARDIAN says, "Long, overblown revival does little to make a case for this old-fashioned musical." THE TIMES says, "Fine revival."

Directed by Lindsay Posner, the cast includes Henry Goodman as 'Teyve'

Fiddler on the Roof is based on the Sholem Aleichem stories, Book by Joseph Stein, Music by Jerry Bock, Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick

Choreography by Jerome Robbins (recreated by Sammy Dallas Bates) with additional choreography by Kate Flatt. It is designed by Peter McKintosh with lighting by Peter Mumford.

It is produced in the West End by Kim Poster for Stanhope Productions and Bulldog Theatrical.

'Tevye' the dairyman is an old-fashioned father who wants to see his daughters married in the traditional Jewish way. But revolution is in the air and the young are guided by their hearts, not their elders. Set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, this is the tale of the emotional turmoil of a family facing upheaval in their lives.
