& Juliet, Dear Evan Hansen, and Fiddler on the Roof are set to battle it out at this year's Olivier Awards as the three musicals dominated the nominations.

Max Martin musical & Juliet, which continues the story William Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers to a modern pop soundtrack, leads the way with nine nominations, including best musical, best choreography and best original score or new orchestrations.

The Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Fiddler on the Roof comes in a close second with eight nominations, including best actor in a musical for Andy Nyman, and best actress in a musical for co-star Judy Kuhn.

Dear Evan Hansen, the Broadway import by The Greatest Showman writers Pasek and Paul, received the third most nominations, with seven nods including best actor for the lead Sam Tutty.

As for the plays, Ian Rickson's Rosmersholm, Marianne Elliot and Miranda Cromwell's Death of a Salesman and Jamie Lloyd's Cyrano de Bergerac share the honours, with five nominations apiece with each going up against The Old Vic's Present Laughter (four nominations) for best revival.

In the acting categories, Andrew Scott will be hoping to follow up his Critics' Circle Award win last month with the best actor award, for which he will be competing with Toby Jones for Uncle Vanya, James McAvoy for Cyrano de Bergerac and Wendell Pierce for Death of a Salesman at Young Vic.

Pierce's castmate Sharon D Clarke is nominated for best actress, alongside Rosmersholm's Hayley Atwell, The Doctor's Juliet Stevenson, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for her cult hit play Fleabag.

In the musical acting categories, Dear Evan Hansen received two nominations in each of the supporting role categories, while Sam Tutty will go up against Charlie Stemp for Mary Poppins, Andy Nyman for Fiddler on the Roof, and Jac Yarrow for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for best actor in a musical.

The award for best actress in a musical will be between Audrey Brisson for Amélie The Musical, Judy Kuhn for Fiddler On The Roof, Miriam-Teak Lee for & Juliet, and Zizi Strallen for Mary Poppins.
