Laura Michelle Kelly confirmed as lead in Mary Poppins

Laura Michelle Kelly has been confirmed to play the lead in the musical stage adaptation of Mary Poppins, based on the stories by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Walt Disney film, which will open at the Prince Edward Theatre on 15 December 2004, forty years after the premiere of the film. (The show will play at Bristol Hippodrome from Sep 2004 before its West End run)

Kelly said: "I am absolutely thrilled at the opportunity I have been given."This is truly the role of a lifetime." Sir Cameron said: "When we started discussing the casting of Mary Poppins for the stage, we dreamt of finding an actress who was on the brink of stardom, but not yet associated by the public with a particular role. "We are thrilled that Laura has won the part and we feel sure she will bring her own unique quality to this extraordinary and much-loved role."

Laura Michelle Kelly has appeared in "Les Miserables", "Mamma Mia", "Beauty and the Beast" and "Whistle Down The Wind" in the West End and is currently appearing in "Fiddler on the Roof" on Broadway.

The show is produced by Thomas Schumacher for Disney Theatrical Productions, and Cameron Mackintosh.

Mary Poppins include many of the original songs from the film with music and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman. Including "Chim Chim Cher-ee", A Spoonful of Sugar", "Feed The Birds" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

The new stage production has been created, in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh, Julian Fellowes who has written the book, and George Stiles and Anthony Drewe who have written the new songs and additional music and lyrics.

It is directed by Richard Eyre, co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne, with additional choreography by Stephen Mear. Bob Crowley will design the sets and costumes. Lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound by Andrew Bruce, and orchestrations by William David Brohn.
