"Lorna Luft : Songs My Mother Taught Me" to close one week early 21 Aug 2004

Lorna Luft : Songs My Mother Taught Me, celebrating the music of Judy Garland, will close one week early on 21 Aug 2004

The show opened for a limted run at the Savoy Theatre on 6 July 2004, following previews from 1 July, to mixed to poor notices from the popular press: FIONA MOUNTFORD for EVENING STANDARD says, "Lorna Luft....is claiming her 15 minutes in the borrowed limelight. And it is not a pretty sight." THE GUARDIAN says, "The show is purest showbusiness." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Astonishingly over-the-top show." CLIVE DAVIS for THE TIMES says, "Offers more treacle than insights." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Luft is a bore."

This production which has been touring the USA in one form or another since 1999, is written and directed by Mitzie and Ken Welch, and stars Lorna Luft, the daughter of Judy Garland and half-sister of Liza Minnelli.

Lorna Luft reflects on what it was like growing up as Judy Garland's daughter and also sings some of her mother's songs, including "Come Rain or Shine", "For Me and My Gal", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "You Made Me Love You" and "The Trolley Song."

The show also pays homage to some of the composers, performers and pals who were part of Judy Garland's life including Harold Arlen, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
