The hit musical version of the 1988 black-comic teen movie Heathers is back in London – and it is the opening show of the city’s newest theatre venue, the Arts at Marble Arch powered by TodayTix, right in the heart of the capital. Heathers the Musical has boasted a fervent fanbase ever since it had its Off-Broadway premiere in 2014, and the UK fans have proven especially loyal, celebrating every iteration of this unique show – from its London premiere at The Other Palace in 2018, starring Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jamie Muscato, and its subsequent West End transfer, to its record-breaking national tours and triumphant West End runs.

It’s a deeply relatable premise

OK, so most of us probably haven’t experienced the murder and mayhem featured in the show, but we have all been at school and likely had a tough time of it at certain points. The musical begins with Westerberg High outsider Veronica getting adopted into a terrifying clique, the Heathers, and instructed to do their bidding – including bullying other students.

Veronica then strikes up a romantic relationship with a seeming lifeline: mysterious, poetry-spouting, bad-boy outsider J.D., who understands Veronica’s pain and encourages her to fight back against the Heathers. However, his approach involves killing off these scrunchie-wearing tyrants, leading Veronica down an even darker path. It takes immense courage for her to stand up to J.D. as well and upend her school’s hierarchy.

Her journey will likely chime with numerous audience members (especially those in their teens or young adulthood, whose adolescent experiences are fresh), and is surely part of why Heathers has such an emotional claim on fans. If you’ve ever felt judged, shamed, ostracised, or sickened by bullying behaviour, you’ll feel seen by Heathers – but you’ll get to process all of that within the framework of a brilliantly witty, edgy, stylish, and entertaining musical.

It has unforgettable characters and songs

There’s a reason why Heathers is such a cosplay favourite – and it’s not just that its titular clique sport such iconic (and easily reproduced) colour-coded schoolgirl costumes. All of the characters in the show are memorable: they’re vividly drawn, complex, nuanced, and fun to revisit again and again.

Veronica is the avatar for many viewers: the intelligent, sharply observant but fundamentally misunderstood high schooler who struggles to fit in. She shares powerful numbers with her extremely attractive (initially, at least) love interest, J.D., such as “Dead Girl Walking”. It’s a more complicated version of the standard teen romance, and has been brilliantly played by performers like Fletcher and Muscato, expanding on the relationship originated by the movie’s Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

But the devils might just get the best tunes here: the Heathers’ vampy anthem “Candy Store” has rightly become a breakout fan favourite. This fiendish trio are deliciously evil, albeit with just enough individual shading for us to engage with them too. There are plenty of scene-stealing supporting characters as well, such as eccentric teacher Ms. Fleming, who hijacks a therapy assembly by belting out “Shine A Light”, perpetually bullied student Martha, and the bone-headed jocks Ram and Kurt.

It tackles serious issues

Heathers walks an incredibly difficult tight rope, mixing razor-sharp comedy, pop-inflected music, a heightened tone, and stylised visuals with potent, timely subject matter. It’s a balance that not many musicals could achieve, but with that high risk has come reward – namely a serious underpinning to its glossy top layer, giving the show heft and lasting impact.

That, surely, is a major reason why fans feel so passionately about it. It’s not just fun, it’s also thought-provoking and even moving. As well as the depiction of Veronica’s struggles as a lonely outsider, and the bullying of various students, the musical tackles everything from mental health, sexuality and identity to depression, eating disorders, and violence.

Yet it does so without preaching or losing its satirical archness, so it’s a fresh and empowering way to engage with these topics. Jenny Seagrave, chairperson of the Bill Kenwright Group, even noted how apt the show’s new Arts at Marble Arch home is, just a stone’s throw from the famous Speakers’ Corner, “where, for over 150 years, people have gathered to discuss, dissent and speak their own truth”.

The iconic 80s movie was reclaimed by a new generation in its musical form. Now, those devoted fans can revisit it, while yet another generation of young audiences connects with both its rich themes and its gleefully entertaining delivery. Colour us stoked!
