It has been announced that the UK premiere of Joe DiPietro and David Bryan's musical The Toxic Avenger will run at the Southwark Playhouse from 22 April to 21 May 2016 with an official opening on 26 April 2016.

Produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment in association with the King's Head Theatre, Guy James and Szpiezak Productions it is based on the 1984 cult film of the same name and debuted off-Broadway in 2009 where it won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.

This London premiere will be directed by Benji Sperring with musical direction by Alex Beetschen, lighting design by Nic Farman and choreography by Lucie Pankhurst.

"The citizens of Tromaville are crying out for a hero - enter Melvin Ferd the Third, an aspiring earth scientist determined to clean up the toxic waste problem. But when a corrupt Mayor and her government goons try to stop this heroic feat, Melvin is tossed into a vat of toxic waste and transformed into The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey's first superhero!"

Described as a rock 'n' roll musical comedy, it is written by the Tony Award-winning creative team behind West End hit 'Memphis', Joe DiPietro and David Bryan.

The production also introduces reserved seating to the Southwark Playhouse Large Space, giving audience members a chance to pre-book a specific seat.

Further casting and creative team are yet to be announced. Tickets for the production are now on sale.
