Two Show Day

Top tips for surviving a two-show day in the West End

Over the last couple of years, it has seemed the West End has been awash with epic two-part play. Currently, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child run over two parts which can both be seen in one day, and that's a pretty mammoth task in itself. However theatre nuts across the West End also plan their own two-show days by picking a couple of plays and musicals to watch in one day, booking for a matinee and evening performance.

See two West End shows in one day

Whether you're looking for a jam-packed afternoon at the theatre, can't decide between two shows and want to see both, here are some tips on surviving what can be the daunting prospect of a two-show day.

Find a friend to see a show with you

Theatre is always better with a friend, and there's even science to support it. Last year, researchers measured the heartbeats of people watching Dreamgirls, and found their pulses synchronised, something usually seen between lovers. As fantastic as the shows may be, two-show days can be long and gruelling, so having a partner to experience the day with you can be hugely beneficial. Whether you need some conversation about the show, or some motivation to make it through that final part, having a friend by your side can make all the difference.

Take plenty of water

Naturally, theatre bars can get rather busy. Packing a reusable water bottle for your day can help you avoid the queue. Most theatres allow you to refill your bottle for free, so you won't have to fork out a fortune for drinks at any opportunity you want a drink. Of course, treat yourself to a glass of wine or two, but make sure to stay hydrated throughout the long day.

Pack food to snack on

Similarly, it's a good idea to pack some food for the day, or pick something up. Eating out can be expensive, especially if you need meals before a matinee and an evening meal. A good piece of preparation would be to pack some food for one of these meals, saving you valuable time. But make sure to refuel during the day, otherwise it will hamper your experience.

Check timings of the shows you are seeing

Speaking of timing, make sure to check the running time of your afternoon's first show, and make sure you know when to be back at the theatre for your evening performance. You may have more or less time than you anticipated, and it will help you to plan your day in advance, rather than act off the cuff. It will give you a chance to look up nearby restaurants or bars nearby, and how much time you have to relax. The West End has plenty of choice and variety for everyone, but is quite vast and can get very busy, so it's good to plan your routes.

Stretch your legs for a few minutes

Sitting in a dark room for the best part of five hours cumulatively isn't ideal for your body. If you can, and have time, consider taking a stroll around the West End. Wander down The Mall and around Trafalgar Square, do some shopping on Oxford Street or pop into the National Gallery between shows to keep the blood pumping and shake off any numbness you might have picked up.
