'War Horse' to return to National Theatre ahead of 20th anniversary
Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel, War Horse is set at the beginning of the First World War and follows Albert as he strives to be reunited with his horse Joey.
War Horse is set to return to its original home the National Theatre this spring. Performances will begin in the Olivier theatre on 16 May.
Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel, War Horse is set at the beginning of the First World War and follows Albert as he strives to be reunited with his horse Joey. The play is adapted by Nick Stafford, and was originally directed by Marianne Elliott (Angels in America) and Tom Morris (Dr Semmelweis).
The rest of the creative team includes set and costume design by Rae Smith (The Importance of Being Earnest) and puppetry by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. This production is directed by Tom Morris, alongside revival director Katie Henry.
War Horse has won more than 25 major awards including the Tony Award for Best Play and has been seen by over 8.8 million people. The play celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2027.
In a review of the production from 2007, our critic said: "War Horse is a brilliant and unique production. I've never seen anything like this before, and I don't expect I ever will again."
Casting is yet to be announced.
