Stephen Sondheim's posthumously produced surrealist musical, *Here We Are*, based on two of Luis Buñuel's films, comes to the National Theatre for its UK premiere.  Book *Here We Are* tickets on London Theatre. 

*Here We Are* tells the story of a wealthy couple, Leo and Marianne Brink, who take their friends out for a meal at a highly-reviewed restaurant. However, it quickly becomes clear that things aren't as they seem. Act One is based on Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel's *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie*, in which upper-class friends cannot get any food to eat. Act Two is based on Buñuel's film, *The Exterminating Angel*, in which the wealthy friends have made it to the dinner but cannot leave. 

The star-studded cast includes Tony winners Jesse Tyler Ferguson (*Take Me Out*), Jane Krakowski (*She Loves Me*), and Paulo Szot (*& Juliet*). Off-Broadway cast members reprising their roles in the production include Tracie Bennett and Denis O'Hare. Rory Kinnear and Richard Fleeshman are also members of this exceptional cast. 

*Here We Are* is a musical that Sondheim worked on for almost a decade before his death in 2021. The musical's book is by Tony Award-nominee David Ives (*All in the Timing, Venus in Fur*). In 2023, it had its world premiere at The Shed Off-Broadway in New York City. 

The New York production was met with high praise, including [Vulture's review](https://www.vulture.com/2023/10/theater-review-sondheim-here-we-are.html), which said, "What a thrill to hear the unmistakable syncopations, the spikes and leaps and the intermittent yearning silkiness of this music, one last first time." 

This show boasts an excellent creative team, many of whom were on the original staging in 2023. They include Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (*WICKED, Assassins*), lighting designer Natasha Katz (*MJ the Musical*), set and costume designer David Zinn (*Once Upon a Mattress*), choreographer Sam Pinkleton (*Oh, Mary!*), and sound designer Tom Gibbons (*Opening Night*).

The Lyttelton Theatre is a prominent venue in London, known for its contribution to arts and culture. Belonging to the Royal National Theatre, it's one of the three auditoriums which together host a broad spectrum of performances. ## How to Get to Lyttelton Theatre 

Based in South Bank, the theatre is well connected to London's various transport options. Nearest tubes include Waterloo Station, serviced by the Northern, Jubilee, Bakerloo, and Waterloo & City lines. From Waterloo Station, the theatre is just a few minutes walk via Waterloo Bridge. Several bus services also pass close to the theatre, including routes 1, 4, 26, 59, 68, 76, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, and X68. Driving is not recommended due to limited parking facilities.

*Stereophonic* tells the story of a 1970s British-American group who are recording their second rock album. Various tensions, including romantic arguments, get in the way of their studio session, but the actual music is glorious, leading you to ask whether such drama is necessary in the creation of great art or a by-product. Either way, the songs are total bangers.

Duke of York's Theatre is well-connected to public transportation. The closest tube stations include Charing Cross, Leicester Square, and Covent Garden. Alternatively, several buses stop near St Martin's Lane. For those driving, there are car parks nearby. However, due to London's congestion charge, public transport is the most convenient and often, the easiest way to reach the theatre.

The London Coliseum, located in the heart of London is the largest theatre in London's West End. Built by architect Frank Matcham and opening its doors for the first time in 1904, the theatre houses just under 2,359 seats, spread out over four levels. Stylistically, the design is Edwardian Baroque - known for its grandeur and detail-oriented style. A site of both historic and cultural importance, The Coliseum is famed for its variety of productions including musical comedies, variety shows, and classic dramas. Since 1968, it has been the London home of the English National Opera (ENO) and is also used by the English National Ballet during the Christmas period. The London Coliseum is easily accessible by a variety of transport options. It is located at St Martin's Lane, London, WC2N 4ES. The nearest underground station is Leicester Square on the Northern and Piccadilly Lines whilst the Charing Cross station servicing the Northern, Bakerloo and the British Rail Lines is just a short walk away. Additionally, a variety of buses service the area including the routes 3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 15, 24, 29, 30, 53.

Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein’s show has been a staple of the musical theatre canon since it premiered in 1964. It centres on Jewish milkman Tevye, who believes faithfully in the cultural traditions of his village, but his three daughters challenge his ideas when they decide to marry for love – and the world is also changing around them.

That’s just one of many incredibly fun songs written by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally for this (deliberately!) corny show set in the fictional Cob County. The score mixes a contemporary country-pop sound with classic musical theatre, and balances thoroughly silly puns with heartfelt emotion – and just a kernel of truth.

- While *Shucked* has moved away from its *Hee Haw* roots, it retains some similarities with its predecessor. Both take place in Kornfield Kounty, and characters like Gordy and Lulu have remained in the show.
- Robert Horn is also known for his work on Tootsie, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.

**Regent's Park Open Air Theatre** is a London-based theatre venue that sits within a beautiful Royal Park. The theatre holds a capacity of 1,240 individuals, showcasing a variety of performances from classic Shakespearean plays to modern contemporary pieces, and even musicals. It was established in 1932, and the uniqueness of the venue has since then captivated the hearts of both Londoners and guests from all around the world. The theatre's characteristic feature - total exposure to the elements - often compels creative interpreters to rethink and reshape their performances, resulting in unforgettable renderings of familiar plays. **How to get to the venue:** The theatre is based close to Baker Street and Great Portland Street underground stations thereby making it easily accessible by underground trains. My personal favourite is the “Backstage Romance” medley, featuring “Bad Romance”, “Tainted Love”, “Toxic” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, but “El Tango de Roxanne” is also unforgettable.

Welcome to the Moulin Rouge.&nbsp;This is not your Parisian night club from the early 2000's in the film or from the turn-of-the-century (other century) France where the tragic love story of fledgling American writer Christian and washed-up showgirl Satine is set. This, mon chérie, is an all-new, all-adrenaline rush of a show that leverages the movie's magic and adds the secret ingredient: theatrical magic.&nbsp;Timbers is not afraid to use every tool in his directing arsenal with this self-aware, but not self-conscious, amalgamation of vintage and modern, classic and contemporary. Every creative team member is clearly working overtime to deliver excellence and opulence.Seventy-plus pop songs, precisely arranged by music supervisor Justin Levine? Check. Show-stopping ensemble dance numbers choreographed like a pop concert by Sonya Tayeh? You bet. A veritable smorgasbord of lighting effects from designer Justin Townsend? Of course. Jewel-dripping bodices and crushed velvet for days in Catherine Zuber's elaborate ensembles? Bien sûr.However, sometimes extravagance can mask the cracks, which make the barrier between art and life transparent. On Wednesday night's performance, this show-stopper literally stopped. During Act 2, between high-energy ensemble numbers "Chandelier" and "Roxanne," the show was held due to technical difficulties for about 20 minutes.&nbsp;While stage management handled everything smoothly and professionally, the momentary pause felt like watching a show within a show within a show. After all, Moulin Rouge! The Musical catalogues the backstage drama of the eponymous nightclub struggling to make it while putting on a new production.Here we were in the audience, watching a company that's weathered more than its share of Covid difficulties and delays with an opening twice-postponed, still doing their thing and putting on a show, despite the hardship.It's a testament to resilience and artistry, something that both the show and this company clearly celebrate. The leading lovers, played by Liisi LaFontaine and Jamie Bogyo, deliver a youthful energy that belies their characters' weary struggles, and each is charming and well-sung.&nbsp;However, the standouts of the evening are in the supporting cast and the ensemble. As writer and unabashed bohemian Toulouse-Lautrec, Jason Pennycooke steals every scene he's in, and Elia Lo Tauro oozes charisma as Christian's rapscallion friend Santiago. Clive Carter channels Jim Broadbent from the film in a pitch-perfect portrayal of the club's emcee Harold Zidler, and every ensemble dancer deserves their own shoutout for the hard work and energy they're delivering onstage.&nbsp;After all, theatre and the Moulin Rouge are about family and community, something we've all been missing these past few years. Watching a powerful show where despite trials onstage and off, the power and perseverance of the human spirit is what overcomes, is healing. And as soon as those snaps click into place at the top of "Lady Marmalade," you know you're safe to go along for the ride.
