## What to Watch For

- The *Wicked* soundtrack is out of this world. No, really! To wake up astronauts on a mission, NASA once played astronauts the song "Defying Gravity".
- To make up Glinda’s bubble dress that she wears at the start of the show, 36 petals are featured, as well as 20 types of sequin. Nearly 100,000 sequins actually appear on the dress! In order to maintain the dress, it takes one person four hours, for four days a week to care for it.
- In the history of *Wicked* in London, there is only one person to have played both the roles of Elphaba and Glinda — Louise Dearman, in 2012.
- Wicked uses the “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” notes for “Unlimited / I’m Limited” during the show.

Winnie Holzman’s multilayered book peels back L. Frank Baum’s *The Wizard of Oz* to shine more light on what happens along the way. Every time you watch Wicked, you’ll hear a new line, or see a new character approach that uncovers more information; it’s no wonder that Wicked fans — Ozians — visit the land of Oz dozens of times to unpick the hidden truths about the lion, the scarecrow, and the tin man.

*Wicked* wouldn’t be complete without [Stephen Schwartz’s influential score](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/stephen-schwartz-musicals); and songs like “For Good” now transcend popular culture as pop stars, like Leann Rimes and Delta Goodrem, cover the iconic duet. But there’s no place like home, and that’s hearing Schwartz’s anthemic songs live, complete with a 23-piece orchestra. Pair Schwartz’s music with Wayne Cilento’s explosive choreography, especially in the show-stopping “Dancing Through Life” when the students go to their first dance, and Wicked is poetry in motion.

Eugene Lee’s intricate and moody scenic design extends into the auditorium, thanks to a giant smoking dragon and flying monkeys climbing up the walls. Kenneth Posner’s lighting design and Tony Meola’s sound design amplify the tension, especially when the animated wizard mask comes alive and the wizard’s booming voice reverberates around the auditorium. But there’s plenty of brightness too, especially in Susan Hilferty’s viridescent Ozian costumes and Galinda’s kaleidoscopic wardrobe.

Elphaba has become a coveted role for thousands of performers. From Idina Menzel winning the Tony Award for originating the role on Broadway to Kerry Ellis, Rachel Tucker, and Louise Dearman, each performer has put their own spin on the role and the iconic ballads: “The Wizard and I,” I’m Not That Girl,” “Defying Gravity,” and “No Good Deed”. Lucie Jones comes into her own as the green witch, deftly moving from frustration to sweetness to fury, as Elphaba navigates the world around her and quickly learns that not everyone means what they say. Helen Woolf is bubbly perfection as Glinda, with her sweet soprano and dry wit.

There’s something in *Wicked* for everyone. From the childlike wonder at the magical world of Oz to the political undertones about our leaders’ role in society to the universal message that true beauty lies within, *Wicked* leaves the audience with food for thought and also, wanting more. The Apollo Victoria Theatre is a world-renowned venue located in the heart of London. Since its inception in 1929, the theatre has been staging a myriad of performances, constantly exuding a vibrant atmosphere. With its striking art deco interior and a capacity of 2,304, the theatre continues to provide a rich sensory experience for all attendees. The Apollo Victoria Theatre is especially famous for hosting long-lasting musicals including 'Wicked' which has been running since 2006. The theatre provides state-of-the-art sound and light systems which complement the dynamic and innovative performances that grace its stage. Its enviable location, in the vicinity of Victoria Station, makes it effortlessly accessible to both local and international patrons.

__Getting to the Venue__ 

The Apollo Victoria Theatre is conveniently located at 17 Wilton Rd, London. It can be easily reached by numerous means of public transportation. Victoria Station, which services the Victoria, District and Circle Lines, is just opposite the theatre. Numerous buses also stop near the theatre including routes 38, 73, 8, amongst others. For those preferring to drive, the theatre is part of the Q-Park Scheme offering a 50% discount on car parking in some locations.

*Back to the Future* fans will be pleased to know that Bob Gale, who co-wrote the movie and its sequels with Robert Zemeckis, is also the book writer for the musical version, while Zemeckis is a co-creator. Glen Ballard joins Bob Gale for all the sci-fi fun.

Ballard collaborated on the *Back to the Future* score with composer Alan Silvestri. Silvestri supplied the music for numerous Robert Zemeckis films: *Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit* and *The Polar Express*. The two-time Academy Award nominee also composed for movies such as *The Bodyguard, The Parent Trap* and the Avengers films.

John Rando directs the *Back to the Future* West End production. He's a Tony Award winner for *Urinetown the Musical* and a nominee for his Broadway revival of *On the Town*. He assembled a crack creative team, and together they crank up the speed to 88 miles per hour and make the impossible happen live on stage.

## What to Watch For:

- Time travel is a big inspiration to the show’s composers, who also reflect on some of the emotional elements of time – like wondering what your future holds. Several of the song titles refer to time in some way. As always, Doc Brown has a more offbeat view, as you’ll see in his number “21st Century”.
- Listen out for your favourite songs from the *Back to the Future* movie, too. They include “Earth Angel” and Chuck Berry’s rollicking “Johnny B Goode” at the dance where Marty’s parents must get together, plus “The Power of Love” – a number one hit for Huey Lewis and the News.
- Reflecting the movie’s mix of genres (sci-fi, comedy, romance, adventure), the musical’s score embraces different styles – from 1950s doo-wop through to 1980s rock, plus some traditional musical theatre balladry and a standout gospel number for the future mayor Goldie Wilson, “Gotta Start Somewhere”.

​​Great Scott! <a href="/actor-profile/roger-bart">Roger Bart</a>, whose positive Covid test kept him from opening night earlier this month, is once again bringing his 1.21 gigawatts of zany energy to Doc Brown. I went back to <a href="/show/back-to-the-future">Back to the Future</a> to see Bart in action (<a href="/theatre-news/west-end-features/mark-oxtoby-back-to-the-future-doc-brown-opening-night">after catching his understudy Mark Oxtoby</a>), and, in both versions of the time-space-actor continuum, enjoyed a show that is, indisputably, a fantastic night out.This West End musical incarnation of the 1985 movie is over a decade in the making, following lengthy development and, of course, a global pandemic, which created a big gap between its Manchester Opera House debut in March 2020 and the London transfer.Yet if any show can manage a time lag, it's surely this one. Film fans should be reassured that this is a faithful adaptation, with the movie's Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Alan Silvestri all returning for the musical - joined by co-composer Glen Ballard and director John Rando.Small tweaks make it more palatable for 2021. The Libyan terrorists are gone, and Lorraine is given slightly more agency, although it's best not to examine the gender relations too closely. (Is&nbsp;beating people up really the only way to prove your masculinity and your worth as a partner?)And, in truth, it's not exactly a musical in the traditional sense. After two viewings, I'd be hard pressed to reproduce much of the original score; the songs that stick are the pop hits used in the movie and triumphantly reprised here, "Johnny B Goode" and "The Power of Love."Likewise, Chris Bailey's choreography includes explosive tricks, along with a shift from breakdancing to swing, but the numbers never build to a climax. Yet both music and movement do enough to serve the story, and this toe-tapping retro-pastiche fun (Grease meets Footloose) slips down as easily as chocolate milk.Most effectively, there's a balance of wit and sincerity. When Marty arrives in 1955, he's greeted by an irony-laden number about the wonders of smoking, asbestos, and white men having their cake and eating it too. Doc Brown later dreams of a utopian 21st-century future with no war or disease (hoho). The show trades on nostalgia, while slyly deconstructing it.The same with the form. A superbly deployed ensemble provides continual backup, but at one point a fourth-wall-breaking Doc Brown suddenly "sees" the dancers and wordlessly ushers them out the door. That goofiness is endearing, and feels like a proper embrace of this new medium.But there's still a rollicking adventure in here, too, anchored by the Michael J Fox-evoking <a href="/actor-profile/olly-dobson">Olly Dobson</a>. He and Courtney-Mae Briggs are instantly believable as the loved-up teens, providing Marty with added motivation to return home, and Dobson reacts brilliantly to the madness around him - particularly his Oedipal nightmare.As Doc Brown, Bart goes full vaudeville. With his lightning-fast changes of mood, voices and physical tics, plus snappy ad-libs, he's like Robin Williams at his most playful. But he also finds stillness for a wistful ballad dedicated to the dreamers. It links up these two worlds of sci-fi and theatre.Rosanna Hyland is an assured, sweet-voiced Lorraine, Hugh Coles a comically awkward and endearing George, Aidan Cutler a satisfying boo-hiss villain, and Cedric Neal provides the musical highlight with the aspirational, gospel-tinged "Gotta Start Somewhere."And yes, the car is a star too: that iconic DeLorean roaring onto the stage and accelerating to 88 miles per hour to blast through time (if petrol is a bust, perhaps we should all switch to plutonium). The audience is totally immersed in that thrilling ride thanks to a crack creative team (Tim Hatley, Tim Lutkin, Gareth Owen, Finn Ross, and Chris Fisher) and it even extends into the auditorium, with strips of LED lights creating a giant fizzing circuit board. There's also a climactic trick that I genuinely can't explain. Theatre magic: how I've missed it.Booking has already extended to July next year. Clearly, this time-hopping spectacle with a heart is also the show of the moment.<div><a href="/show/back-to-the-future">Back to the Future is at the Adelphi Theatre. When Marty McFly is transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the past and send himself... back to the future.

The Adelphi Theatre, located in London's West End, is a historic venue recognised for its rich contribution to London's vibrant theatre scene. ## About *Hamilton the Musical*

The seeds for the *Hamilton* musical were planted when composer Lin-Manuel Miranda purchased a copy of Ron Chernow's biography, *Alexander Hamilton*. Within a few pages, Miranda started to envision the revolutionary's life in musical form and embarked on the project in 2009 by penning *The Hamilton Mixtape* — a number of songs that would later go on to form the show. 

During this time, he was invited to the White House to perform at an evening of Poetry, Music, and Spoken Word in front of President Barack Obama and the First Lady. He treated audiences to the song "Alexander Hamilton", which was met with scattered laughter from the crowd. After workshopping the mixtape, *Hamilton* finally received its Off-Broadway premiere at the Public Theater in 2015 before later transferring to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Another fantastic chapter in West End history has been gloriously (re)written, with not one but two spectacular reinventions -&nbsp;first of a theatre itself, in which the Queen's on Shaftesbury Avenue has been reincarnated as the <a href="/theatres/sondheim-theatre">Sondheim Theatre</a> and completely refurbished by its owner Cameron Mackintosh to restore it from a threadbare functionality to which it had previously been brought back 61 years ago from wartime bomb damage to a glowing and welcoming new warmth. Meanwhile, its current tenant -&nbsp;already the West End's longest-running musical -&nbsp;has itself been entirely overhauled, with Mackintosh taking the opportunity of its temporary 20-week closure for the theatre's refurbishment to replace the original landmark RSC production with a touring version that was first created for a UK tour as part of the show's 25th-anniversary celebrations in 2010. It was briefly seen in London that year at the Barbican - the show's original London home - running contemporaneously with the West End edition, and is even now on a new European and UK tour, currently playing in Zurich before it returns to continue across the regions in March. The first thing to say about it is that it still owes a lot to the original Trevor Nunn and John Caird production -&nbsp;the famous revolve of John Napier's original design may have gone, for instance, but now the actors merely mime the identical movement (originally the work of Kate Flatt, with musical staging now credited to Geoffrey Garratt, long an associate on the original production) as they advance across the stage in the ever-rousing Act One finale of "One Day More" as the iconic red flag is waved above them. Fans of the original will check off numerous such instances, including the indelible image of a dead Enjolras lying across the back of a cart. Crucially, too, the original costume designs of Andreane Neofitou are also retained, so visually there are plenty of references to the original production. There are also several cast veterans of the previous incarnation, including principals Bradley Jaden who was Javert in the final cast of the original and reprises that role now; Jon Robyns, previously Marius and Enjolras, who now graduates to the role of Jean Valjean; and <a href="/actor-profile/carrie-hope-fletcher">Carrie Hope Fletcher</a>, previously Eponine and now playing Fantine (and all three in spectacular voice); amongst others in the ensemble who also include fellow West End returnees Ciaran Bowling, Sarah Lark and Luke McCall. The show remains an ensemble effort, as it was when it was first created by Nunn and Caird. That establishes a welcome sense of continuity from past to present versions, but it is also given a fresh 21st-century inventiveness with Matt Kinley's sets being complemented by stunning painterly projections, inspired by Victor Hugo's own paintings, that have been niftily realised by Fifty-Nine Productions and Finn Ross, all of which are lavishly lit by Paule Constable. Mick Potter's sound is also thrilling, wrapping the theatre is swathes of sumptuous melody, richly played by the pit orchestra under the direction of Steve Moss. As both a producer and theatre owner, Cameron Mackintosh has always been about attention to detail; the reopening of this theatre and show gives him an opportunity to prove his meticulous care in both. But I also love fresh new details, whether it be the reintroduction of rear dress circle boxes that are newly named in honour of Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, or new cast members like West End regular Josefina Gabrielle, who - cast entirely against her usual sophisticated type as Madame Thenardier -&nbsp;is virtually unrecognisable and truly hilarious. The show remains a thrilling triumph. *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button* is a musical that premiered in 2019 at Southwark Playhouse and was staged there again in 2023 for a sell-out run. 

This story tells the classic tale of Benjamin Button, who is born old and gets younger each day. The adaptation is set in a small Cornwall fishing village at the end of World War I. This touching story includes a folk-infused score with songs like *A Matter of Time, The Tide is Comin' in, When E're She Looked at Me*, and *The Kraken's Lullaby*. 

The excellent cast is led by Olivier Award winner John Dagleish (*Sunny Afternoon*) as Benjamin Button, and Olivier Award nominee Clare Foster (*Travesties*) as Elowen Keene. The 13 -strong cast of actor musicians playing 30 instruments also includes Katy Ellis, Matthew Burns, Jonathan Charles, Oonagh Cox, Anna Fordham, Philippa Hogg, Damien James, Elliot Mackenzie, Ann Marcuson, Jack Quarton and Benedict Salter.

Remember, the theatre is located within the London Congestion Charge zone.

*Oliver!* is based on the 1838 novel, *Oliver Twist*, by Charles Dickens. The musical by Lionel Bart first premiered in 1960 and was an instant success, running for 2,618 performances in the West End. Since then, the musical has had numerous award-winning revivals, including earning an Olivier Award in 1997 and three Olivier Award nominations in 2010. 

It’s no wonder that *Oliver!* has been an audience favourite through the decades. The musical has a gripping story that explores many resonant themes, including good vs. evil, friendship, and the relationship between poverty and crime. - *Oliver!* was adapted into a hit film in 1968. It was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Picture and Best Director. 
- The BBC created a reality talent show in 2008 called *I'd Do Anything* to find an actress to play Nancy and three actors to play Oliver. Jodie Prenger won the role of Nancy, and Gwion Jones, Harry Stott, and Laurence Jeffcoate won the role of Oliver. 
- *Oliver!* is a musical told through the viewpoint of a child, so even though crimes are committed throughout the show, there is still a bit of playful innocence to the plot. 
- Lionel Bart, who wrote the musical book and songs, couldn't read or write music. However, he didn't let that stop him as he worked with composer Eric Rogers; Bart hummed the songs, and Rogers transcribed the music.
