Alun Armstrong established himself as one of Britain's most versatile stage actors with multiple Olivier Awards. His commanding performances included the title role in Sweeney Todd (winning the 1994 Olivier Award), Thénardier in Les Misérables (winning the 1985 Olivier Award), and Aimable Castagnet in The Baker's Wife (winning the 1990 Olivier Award). He also earned Olivier Awards for his dramatic work in The Jew of Malta, The Father (1988), and The Crucible (1985).
