Katherine Jenkins was born in Wales in 1980. She began performing during her school days, appearing in productions of Calamity Jane and Guys and Dolls. From 1991 to 1996, she was a member of the Royal School of Church Music Cathedral Singers and also sang with the National Youth Choir of Wales, winning the BBC Radio 2 Welsh Choirgirl of the Year competition on two occasions.

In 1997, she won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music to study singing, and went on to teach singing after graduating. It wasn’t until 2003 that she gained a following, when she was chosen to sing at a celebration of Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee in Westminster Cathedral. She was offered a six-album recording contract with Universal records (the most lucrative recording contract in the United Kingdom’s history of classical recordings) and between 2004 and 2008 she had six number one selling albums in the UK classical charts.

With her music career flourishing, Jenkins appeared on stage in Viva la Diva, a song-and-dance production with ballet dancer Darcey Bussell, learning to tap dance for the show. The duo performed for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance.

2010 saw Jenkins make her television debut in the Christmas Special of Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol in which she played Abigail Pettigrew. With a heightened interest in the different aspects of performing, she was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars in America in 2012, finishing in second place. Jenkins has toured the world extensively, performing in some of the world’s most famous concert halls, as well as performing for troops in Afghanistan. She has performed with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo and Il Divo. Jenkins made her West End debut in 2017, playing Julie Jordan in Carousel at the London Coliseum.
