The 47th Evening Standard Theatre Awards took place on Monday 26th November 01 at the Savoy.

The Winners

BEST ACTOR:
Alex Jennings (The Winter's Tale and The Relapse)

BEST ACTRESS:
Fiona Shaw (Medea)

BEST PLAY:
The Far Side Of The Moon (Robert Lepage)

BEST COMEDY:
Feelgood (Alistair Beaton)

SYDNEY EDWARDS AWARD FOR BEST DIRECTOR:
Deborah Warner (Medea)

BEST STAGE DESIGNER:
Paul Brown (Platonov and The Tempest)

CARLTON TELEVISION BEST MUSICAL:
Kiss Me Kate

OUTSTANDING NEWCOMER:
Rufus Norris (Afore Night Come)

THE PATRICIA ROTHERMERE AWARD
Prunella Scales/Cassandre Joseph
Prunella Scales, who received the award for her lifetime contribution to London's theatre, presented Oxford-based drama student Cassandre Joseph with the prize, which will pay for her drama school tuition fees.

MOST PROMISING PLAYWRIGHT
Roy Williams for Clubland

The judges were Evening Standard chief theatre critic Nicholas de Jongh, Georgina Brown of The Mail On Sunday, Benedict Nightingale of The Times, Susannah Clapp of The Observer, Paul Taylor of The Independent and Jane Edwardes of Time Out magazine. The chairman was Max Hastings.

The award show will be broadcast on Carlton Television on Tuesday 27th Nov 01 at 11.30pm
