Casting confirmed for "Lady from the Sea" at the Almeida Theatre in May 03
Full casting has now been confirmed for Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea, in a new version by Pam Gems, which opens at the Almeida Theatre, in Islington, on 15 May 03, following previews from 8 May 03, and booking to 28 June 03
The cast also includes: Natasha Richardson (Ellida), Claudie Blakley (Bolette), John Bowe (Doctor Wangel), Louisa Clein (Hilde), Benedict Cumberbatch (Lyngstrand), Geoffrey Hutchings (Ballested), Eoin McCarthy (Stranger), Tim McInnerny (Arnholm).
Natasha Richardson's theatre roles in New York include Sally Bowles in Sam Mendes' production of "Cabaret" for which she won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Best Actress, and Anna in "Closer" which was written and directed by Patrick Marber. Her London Theatre credits include David Leveaux' production of "Anna Christie" which subsequently transferred to Broadway, Richard Eyre's production of "High Society" and Charles Sturridge's production of "The Seagull". Her more recent film work includes "Chelsea Walls", "Wakin' Up in Reno" and "Maid in Manhattan". On television her work has included Richard Eyre's "Suddenly Last Summer" and Pat O'Connor's "Zelda".
The Lady from the Sea is directed by Trevor Nunn, designed by Rob Howell, with lighting by Hugh Vanstone
Ellida feels trapped in a stifling marriage to a widower, Dr Wangel, and is haunted by a love from her past to the point of obsession. In an environment of strict moral rules, she has to decide which future to embrace.
