Renton and his friends relapse, as well as turning to shoplifting, and Spud winds up in jail. Renton goes through the painful process of withdrawal when his parents force him to go cold turkey. But it’s not easy to attempt a fresh start, and he soon gets drawn back into his old life, including a risky drug deal with major consequences.

What are some fun facts about Trainspotting the Musical?
-
The title, Trainspotting, is a deliberately ironic and absurdist one, since the characters often visit the disused Leith Central railway station. It also epitomises the obsessive nature of drug addicts (analogous to that of trainspotters, albeit far less wholesome) and the social despair of the people depicted in the story.
-
Irvine Welsh previously collaborated with Stephen McGuinness, his co-creator on Trainspotting the Musical, for a companion album to Welsh’s 2025 novel Men In Love. That album, which followed the characters from Trainspotting after the events of the earlier book, featured a mix of soul- and disco-inflected tracks.
-
As well as the show’s original numbers, listen out for some of the iconic songs used in the 1996 movie. That best-selling soundtrack featured tracks like Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life”, New Order’s “Temptation”, Blur’s “Sing”, Pulp’s “Mile End”, and Underworld’s “Born Slippy Nuxx”.
-
The cast of characters likewise balances the core group from the original Trainspotting novel (and film adaptation) with some new ones. Welsh further explored this world in his 2012 prequel novel Skagboys and Trainspotting sequels Porno, The Blade Artist, Dead Men’s Trousers, and Men In Love.
