Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts will return to the West End for the first time in half a decade in the role of Persephone in [*Hadestown*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/24465-hadestown-tickets). She will play the part from 16 September until 18 January 2026.

Roberts, who came to prominence in 2002 as one fifth of the BRIT Award-winning group Girls Aloud, made her West End debut in Josie Rourke’s revival of *City of Angels* at the Garrick Theatre in 2020.

On her casting in *Hadestown*, Roberts said: "I am beyond thrilled to be joining the cast of *Hadestown* in London. This show is a true masterpiece, and I am honoured to be a part of such a talented and inspiring team. The role of Persephone has such depth and complexity, she feels light and sorrow, joy and darkness. Her songs are rich with emotion and an absolute joy to sing, and I’m excited to explore every facet of her character on stage. 

"I am grateful for this incredible opportunity, and I can't wait to share this journey with audiences in London. Let's take a trip to the underworld together!" 

Roberts joins Desmonda Cathabel as Eurydice, Chris Jarman as Hades, Cedric Neal as Hermes, and Dylan Wood as Orpheus. 

Melanie Bright, Allie Daniel and Lauran Rae play the Fates; Femi Akinfolarin, Michelle Andrews, Ollie Bingham, Laura Delany and Sebastian Lim-Seet play the Workers, with Lucinda Buckley, Juan Jackson, Oisín Nolan-Power, Lindo Shinda and Jasmine Triadi as Swings. 

Anaïs Mitchell's genre-defying musical retells the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, weaving their love story with that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.

Anaïs Mitchell originally released the fusion of New Orleans jazz and American folk melodies as a concept album in 2010 to critical appraisal. In 2016, Hadestown premiered in Canada and later opened at London's National Olivier Theatre in 2018 under the direction of Rachel Chavkin. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2019 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

Chavkin and Mitchell are joined by an award-winning team, including set designer Rachel Hauck, costume designer Michael Krass, lighting designer Bradley King, choreographer David Neumann, and sound designers Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz.

*Hadestown* originated as a concept album by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell in 2010, featuring a collection of songs that retold the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in a post-apocalyptic, Depression-era America. The concept album received critical acclaim and sparked interest in developing it into a fully-fledged theatrical production. 

In 2016, *Hadestown* premiered in Canada and opened in London at the National’s Olivier Theatre in 2018, directed by Rachel Chavkin and featuring a score by Anaïs Mitchell that incorporates blues, jazz, and folk elements. It premiered on Broadway in April 2019 and won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

## What To Watch For

- Director Rachel Chavkin is no stranger to unconventional adaptations. She directed *Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1912* in 2016 on Broadway, for which she received a Tony nomination for Best Direction of a Musical.
- *Hadestown* marked a reunion for original cast members Patrick Paige and Reeve Carney, who had previously collaborated in the Broadway production of *Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark*.
- Anaïs Mitchell first performed songs from *Hadestown* in community theatres across her home state of Vermont in 2006. It was a long road before *Hadestown* was ready to be performed in 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop Off-Broadway.

The Lyric Theatre, located in the heart of London's West End, showcases an array of stunning productions that immerse spectators in captivating performances. Established in 1888, it is one of the oldest playhouses in the city, boasting of an ornate Victorian design. The gilded balustrades, multi-tiered balconies, and grand proscenium arch create an environment that harks back to the rich tradition of British theatre. Currently, it hosts over 900 spectators, promising an intimate experience. Over the years, it has featured renowned shows like ‘Cats’ and ‘Thriller Live’. 

## Getting to the Venue 

Situated on Shaftesbury Avenue, reaching the Lyric Theatre is straightforward. The nearest underground station is Piccadilly Circus, just a four-minute walk away. It's served by the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines, offering convenient access from various parts of London. If travelling by bus, lines 14, 19, 22B, 38, 53, 88, 94, and 159 all stop nearby. For those driving, the closest car park is at Brewer Street, about a ten-minute walk away. Do take note of congestion charges when planning your visit.

The Lyric Theatre opened on 17 Dec. 1888. From the twentieth century, the theatre's typically hosted plays and musicals. Notable shows include *The Royal Family* starring Laurence Olivier, and the original production of Willy Russell’s *Blood Brothers*.

In recent years, the Lyric Theatre has become heavily associated with Michael Jackson — the *Thriller Live* concert ran for 13 years. Michael Jackson then made way for Bob Marley with *Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Story.* Nimax Theatres has owned the Lyric Theatre since 2005.

## Lyric Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels – Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle and Balcony. In the Stalls, the view of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle in Rows Q and R. 

In the Dress Circle, there is a shallow rake.

The Upper Circle offers shallow legroom. The balcony does not hinder the view. 

The Balcony is very high up, but the seats offer a good view of the stage.
