Summary
- Nicola Roberts has been performing as Persephone in Hadestown since 16 September 2025
- She is leaving the production early due to having a small surgical procedure
- Joy Wielkens is due to play Persephone from 20 January
Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts has confirmed that she will need to leave the cast of Hadestown in the West End earlier than planned due to "a small surgical procedure".
She was due to perform as Persephone in the show through 18 January, but has now withdrawn under advice from her doctor.
The full statement read: “I’m so sad and disappointed to have to share this news with you all. Today I have learnt that I have to undergo a small surgical procedure and have been informed by my doctor that as a result I will be unable to complete my final week of Hadestown shows. Everything is ok.
“I am heartbroken I won’t get to share the stage with my incredible cast who I love dearly and perform for the passionate Hadestown audiences I’ve had the privilege to get to know over these last 5 months.
“I have adored playing the role of Persephone, it has been a dream come true and I’m so upset not to be able to fulfil my final week and to leave the show without a proper goodbye.
“I’m so sorry to anyone who had organised trips and booked tickets for my last week. This is completely out of my control and really I have to follow my doctor’s instructions. Sending love to everyone, thank you for your continued support and understanding.”
The musical, which has music, lyrics and book by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, tells the overlapping love stories of two couples from Greek myths: Orpheus and Eurydice, and Persephone and Hades.
The cast also includes Desmonda Cathabel as Eurydice, Chris Jarman as Hades, Daniel Breaker as Hermes, and Dylan Wood as Orpheus. Joy Wielkens is due to play Persephone from 20 January to 8 March.
