Porgy and Bess to close at Savoy 5 May 2007

Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, which was booking to Oct 2007 at the Savoy Theatre, will now close on 5 May 2007. ( to make way for Fiddler on the Roof, which is now at the Savoy from 19 May 2007).

Directed by Trevor Nunn, the musical opened at the Savoy Theatre on 9 Nov 2006, following previews from 25 Oct, to good notices from the popular press: THE EVENING STANDARD says, " Ardent production." THE INDEPENDENT says, " 'Electrifying' is an overworked word in the critical lexicon, but if ever a show deserved it, it is Trevor Nunn's magnificent revival." THE STAGE says, "A visual and aural spectacle." THE TIMES says, "Nunn's company brings enormous energy and plenty of class to Ira Gershwin's libretto."

The cast includes: Clarke Peters (Porgy) & Nicola Hughes (Bess)

This new musical production has been adapted and re-worked from an opera into a 2½ hour musical by Trevor Nunn. The music has been specially adapted by Gareth Valentine.

Porgy and Bess , has music by George Gershwin, lyrics by DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin and a book by Dubose Heyward, based on "Porgy" by Dubose Heyward and Dorothy Heyward.

The musical features famous songs such as as "Summertime", "I Got Plenty o' Nothin" and "It Ain't Necessarily So".

It is produced in London by Richard Frankel, Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Howard Panter for Ambassador Theatre Group and Tulbart Productions.
